The past week in Car repair

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

I wrote a how do I do that......been there done that.
The good news is that I have a differential unit under the house, so I am going to drop the trans, drain it clean the valve body, and swap the differentials.

The cups on that one are 100mm. :)

Well the tranny is out.....
The rear main seal is starting to leak.. Dam and it is only about 6 years old, 12 month warranty.....Double Dam...
The Flex plates ground down teeth have had metal welded to them and in the process of filing them down.

Isn't it always something....... :(

I might have to take a picture of my welding....

Everything that can go wrong did.

Cleaned all the crap out of the valve body by diss-assembly, and then put it on the tranny and forgot the reverse piston, had to take it apart... Dropped a brand new can of brake-kleen and broke the valve off of it.....

The paper gasket between the Tranny case and the differential housing tore when I was removing it.
ATF poured everywhere seems the differential was full of it :) , couldn't find the paper gasket local, so I had to run to get material and make one myself.
The case was giving me fits re-assembling it. The Torque convertor wouldn't go on, that is after about 1.5 hours of fussing I finally fingered out the turbine shaft wasn't fully seated... then the TC "popped" right in. I have it all bolted together, and then the TC locked in place, and had to call it a day because of work.... So maybe next week I can get to "hanging" it. I did take a minute to measure the axles at 100mm.... so wow....one thing right.

Oh did I mention that the drivers side wheel bearing was iffy?

And the OLD Differential was full of diluted 90wt/ATF.

Hung the thing, and started the car up.... the tranny isn't shifting right be cause I have a broken distributor Hall connector and wires that are shorting inside the dizzy...

So instead of putting in my spare dizzy, I ordered a new one which should be here today... Then maybe I can tool down the road...
So when it rains it pours..."Morton Salt".

So I took my spare and put it in.
My Car is alive..................and runs down the road with no issues.....so far.
Now to replace the wheel bearing, and lower ball joint and get an alignment....

Antenna Issues

Post by CalAltaDubber »

This actually happened a while ago, but I finally get around to posting it.

I had my MK IV golf at the car wash getting all the crap from the winter off it. While I hit the antenna with the soap brush and the housing cover fell off. Honest I only touched it.

Well as you can see in the picture there was a lot of crap inside the housing that had solidified. It had deteriorated the housing to the point it was ready to fall off. I guess I helped it along.

Any how, trying to find a new base was starting to look like a challenge. An expensive one at that! Then I went to the dealer, who had a nice surprise for me. Not only was the base in stock, they were way less than I expected.

Here is the old base after I removed it. The radio seems to work better in that car now (I wonder why?).

I was wondering if that's what that was. Then again, you might have just been an over-zealous wax fanatic.

Wheel bearing, lower ball joint, and tie-rod end. After re-assembly, going to take a small detour to Pep-Boys and raise some hell.

It seems that they didn't tighten the Jam nut on the tie-rod the last time they aligned it.. AGAIN....
I hope the Technician can walk with a tire, and tie-rod shoved up his ass.

Green car's starter cable was intermittently shorting out to the frame.... causing the car to shut off... then start again... Go figure... DAM NITS... my fault as it was incorrectly re-installed when I hung the starter... Cheap fix as I replaced the whole cable with a spare.

Swapped both fuel pumps, new fuel filter and new fuel pressure regulator. I also replaced several fuel hoses. Here's what the transfer pump looked like.
