Hello from Norfolk, Virginia

Post by bfrey003 »

Hey everyone, been a 'registered member' since december but havent had much time to be on here until now.

I got my 91 cabbie last august and have loved it ever since. got a new top put on a few months ago, and that's about all i've really done. oh, i did switch out door handles to ones i found at pick and pull that had chrome inserts.

I know NOTHING about cars and have practically no tools so i'm using this as a learning experience. i have a hard copy of the haynes manual and downloaded the pdf version of the bentley manual that is floating around here (but neither seem to be helpful to me).

in it's previous life(s) i dont think my baby was taken care of very well as when i went to get the first oil change the guy told me it had the original fuel filter. whether he was lying or telling the truth, i thought it best to go ahead and replace it.

Besides flushing all the fluids, here's a list of things i was told need to be done:
  • replace belts
    replace cv axels
    Valve cover gasket
    Timing belt and tensioner replacement
Over the winter my hvac system no longer works, ie when i cut the heat/air on nothing happens.

and of course there's the secondary fixes like cruise control, replace upholstery, upgrade sound system, and so on...

I look forward to talking with everyone and getting A LOT of help!

Welcome, and a site that you should get familiar with:
www.cabby-info.com
http://reflectionsandshadows.com/a1-tech/

There are tons of how-tos here, and kamys site as well as Ron's

Most of my how to's use the basic tools that you will need, and Kammy has a list of them on her site.
Original oil filters, sound as if they were blowing smoke up your ass, as you shouldn't be using Generic filters ie: kraken, bosch, pepboys, pureolator, fram.
Stick with
Wix, napagold, Mann, Mahl, genuinevw, mobil1, stp, pureone(gold) as they have been proven to eliminate the flickering oil pressure light at idle.
If you aren't using 10W40 or 20w50 in your car you should IMHO

Oh and I am the Sphincter of this forum. :)

Awesome!

I bought the car from a young honda mechanic. he told me that i should use straight 30 weight, tho i still have low oil pressure issues. I went to a 'thinner' oil over winter, but now that it's summer i'll need something to keep up with the heat. I noticed that everyone on here does suggest 10W40 or 20w50. do you use that all year? is one better over the other?

i eventually plan on putting an oil cooler in and a 2L oil pump as everyone here says those are the recommended remedies.

like i said i'm not a car person so i have a lot (and i mean a lot) of questions, so please bare with me.
