clutch cable question..

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

clutch cable question..

Post by Dub Delay »

Hello all. New to the forum here. I've owned and wrenched on plenty of air and water cooled VWs in the past. After 6 years away from them, I've finally come back. 8)

So I picked up a rough 87 Cabby for $400, it needs some work, but it runs and drives and has potential.

I have a problem with the clutch cable and I can't remember exactly how it is designed. Somebody has made a plate from a washer and a piece of steel pipe that goes over the hole where the cable enters the firewall. I seem to remember a fat rubber donut with washers on either end that goes there on my other VWs, but I'm not sure, it's been a while.

The problem with this plate is the cable is not spaced far enough from the pedal and there is an inch of slack in the pedal. I've cut it down some, but it still needs more space between the plate and the firewall. I don't know if I'm missing a part or what, can someone tell me how it is supposed to be? Thanks

Sounds like the " firewall feed-thru cut by the cable syndrome" and that it was repaired, there are no rubber washers on mine on either side of the firewall. To Adjust the cable for freeplay, read the bentley, or pull the slack out at the clutch arm.
