Yesterday, I decided to look and clean my MAF sensor, so I took aapart the air box. Cutting the silicone that seals the case was fun, but the MAF sensor was really cruddy with carbon build up that I cleaned with alcohol and q-tips. I also took time to look at my air box. Not wanting to destroy it totaly I opted for removing the exhaust flap for the Cold engine warm up. I noticed that when it is used it covers the Fresh air for warm air off the manifold. Since I changed to a header this was no longer needed.
I cut the sucker out, which opened a new air way for my engine to breath on.
It didn't increase the HP, it did change the pitch of my exhaust, I have quicker response from my pedal. I have a relativly full tank and can compare the MPG to original, but all in all it was a mod that I can live with.
I thought about leaving the vaccuume servo off as that would of opened a real large hole too, but decided that having that open will add to the likly hood of potential crap coming to the air box, and that may not be a bad thing I still might but I need to come up with a shutter thing to deflect moisture off.
I also changed the AIR Filter, to see the total changes that I have made.
I looked at a k&n filter, but I don't like having to Recharge it. I prefer the use and loose type. (personal feelings)
As a matter of fact I was considering making my own filter out of the 3m home filters but that too is like work.
Well enjoy the holiday 4th and Dominion day, I am off after this post to install another top with a new friend and Cabby owner and to expouse the virtues of http://www.toplessrabbit.com.

I'm thinking this mod is like what was done back in the day when we all swissed the air box. You on the other hand are using what is there to do the same thing. You won't hurt anything by doing this, besides the more air the merry'r.
As for the K&N thing I can't agree more. I used them in the past on VW's and my other rides and noticed that after a recharge I found myself cleaning the MAF, IAT, and throttle body more then if I used a normal paper filter. not liking this too much.
So far I am happy with the cone filter I have on the Jetta and plan on running one on my Cab when I get it converted over. Hopefully early next year.
