The 1st day of winter (1 June 2013) I left the Golf outside facing uphill. This is not usually a problem even when it rains, however it was the heaviest rain fall for the last couple of years.

I was not aware the rain tray drains were blocked so water flowed into the cabin through the fresh air vent..flooding the interior with 5cm of water.

Removal of the seats and rear carpet was straight forward and are now drying. But I can't work out how to remove the front centre console. I have removed the five screws but it's stuck under the knee bar. The low parts of the console have two metal tie rods held by black plastic buttons. Do I remove these or remove the knee bar ?

The car is a '93 Australia model (Right hand drive) - no A/C

If all the screws are out, then you usually have to pry it up at the e-brake, then kind of pull up and out from there. It is a Kind of pull up, to the back of the car, and up then back and out.

It isn't a straight back pull,

What Brian said is good.
Also it will help to remove the shifter boot as well. Just push ths middle of the base toward the shifter ad it should pop out.
It will give you some wiggle room.

With my '86, I couldn't budge that console without at least loosening up the kneebar. :x (If your AUS-spec car has the JH, you'll need to drop the Jetronic ECU first, if you do loosen/remove the kneebar.)

Yes, I needed to remove the knee bar. Not as hard as I thought.

Remove the two screws holding the bonnet release, remove the screw holding the fuse panel and lift to gain more access to the two nuts and two bolts holding the left side knee bar.

It's the same on the right side. Two nuts two bolts. If the two upper screws of the console have been removed the knee bar pulls out. thats it!

The jettronic unit is in the rain tray, so no need to remove or unplug.
