belts and tensioners

ok, i just had the shop ADD the tensioner (bolt and bracket) for the alternator (there apparently wasnt one). and put a new belt on there. though now it looks like i need another tensioner. The guy at the shop said i need one for the power steering so he can install a belt to drive the alternator. can someone point me to the part(s) i need? he's gonna call the dealer to see what price they have. He raised the car up and showed me the spot right behind the tire between the bottom of the engine and a pulley i think.

WTF? Take a picture if you can then we can see what you may need and what your shop is blowing up your tail pipe.

OK I agree with Brian here.

Sounds like something has been modified, so a picture will tell the whole tale.

Do you have a Bently? If so it does show how all your belts install.

The reasoning is that a 91 with non-working ac.
You have a belt that goes from the a/c compressor to the alternator.
You have one belt that goes from the crank to the water pump to the a/c compressor
You have one belt that goes from the crank to the power steering pump.

To put the Belts on
You have to remove the crank-water pump-a/c compressor belt to replace the a/c compressor alternator belt.

Tensioners are:
On the a/c compressor you have a 22mm Star Gear and a 13mm bolt and nut on the frame side, and a 13mm carriage bolt and 13mm nut on the drivers side of the bracket. Those are a pain in the arse to adjust, and I used to have to pry the a/c up to tighten it from the rear of the car.

New and old style a/c bracket, I have converted both my cabbies to the older type as they are a hell of a lot easier to adjust.




Alternator tensioner is a 22mm Star Gear that has a 13mm bolt through it to the Alternator. The Bracket for the tensioner has the corresponding gear.
Under my thumb, loosening the 13mm bolt that bolts the bracket to the engine.


Shows all 3 styles of brackets, yours should be the upper bracket 25a


The Power steering has a barrel bolt Tensioner. To tighten it you have to loose the 2 13mm bolts on the back side of the p/s pump to the bracket,
then there is the 13mm Long pivot bolt with a 13mm nut, lastly you loosen the barrel bolt nut 13mm too. Tighten the barrel bolt and then re-tighten the remainder. The one 13mm pump bolt is hidden on the back side of the bracket under the t-stat cover.

The 2 rear bolts that have to be loosened.

the top of the yellow is the alternator and the bottom of the yellow is the ac compressor right?

the left side of the blue is the power steering and the right side is the ac compressor right?

What is at the bottom of the red belt?

I think it's missing the part in the middle of the blue/red

No, to the left of the a/c is the water pump.


What is at the bottom of the red belt?
That is the Power steering.

The power steering usually goes from the Crank to the Power steering pump.

Crank inner belt, is from Crank Under the Water pump to A/C compressor outer v-grove.
Crank outer belt is from Crank to the Power Steering Pump.
Alternator pulley to inner A/C Compressor Pulley.

i havent gotten to get down to the shop, but this looks like exactly what the guy described. is there something like this near the water pump, ps pump, and ac compressor? also, it says this is from a 94 jetta, do you think it might work on the 91 cabby?

Unless some one has done the Serp belt conversion on your car, it is usually how I described it.
3 belts.

1st belt inside groove Crank - water pump - outer A/C compressor groove.
2nd belt outside grove Crank - power steering.
3rd belt Inside groove A/C compressor to Alternator.

That bracket will not work.

The ps bracket for the tensioner is not bent, is only attached by the 2 bolts on the back side of the engine.

26 is the bolt, and 22 is the barrel nut stud.

I think it will be better to put another one otherwise you should contact to the tensioner fixer he can better help you.

anyone know where i can find those couple of parts? I'd like to have a working alternator and maybe even some power steering, but i'd also like to not have to buy a brand new p/s pump just for a stupid bracket

The Bracket doesn't come with the power steering pump, so you would be buying it for nothing.
