Top padding
My cabriolet didn't have any padding in between the top and headliner when I bought it, and now that I'm replacing the top, I'm deciding if I need to add some or not. Is there any reason aside from insulation that the padding needs to be there?

It soundproofs the top, and insulates. You don't really need it, but it also pads the top from the frame member so that when you are driving the top doesn't chafe against the frame and wear out prematurely.
With the top pad in place you will get a cleaner more rounded look to the top and not poking metal bits.
Do you really need it? no.
Does it help keep your top on the car longer and prettier? yes.

I'd do it. These cars are surprisingly quiet with the top up if you have the padding. I've owned hardtops that were noisier on the freeway.
