Every mfr. has recalls.
One thing I found out is if you call the mfr. (VW Customer Care for example) with the VIN from your car, they will be able to provide you with a host of information about the car including which recalls affect your car and if the recall has been performed on your car.
I called them about a 1980 Rabbit I had. I found out the name of the dealer where the car was first sold, what options were on the car and that there were no outstanding recall issues for the car. all for a car that had been on the road for over 24 years at the time.
