Re: windshield repair or replace?
Every time I try to remove on, it Cracks............. I need to remove one myself to fix some rust, so I am determined to remove one successfully eventually......
New is probably the best way to go.

Like you said, the crack is about a foot long. You should replace it.reycycle wrote:windshield has a pretty nice crack on the passenger side starting in the corner and working its way twards the center. about a foot long. where might i get a good one anyone have one for sale. can i fix it myself.

Re: windshield repair or replace?
professional window guys rarely get a windshield out without breaking it....i dont remember if a cabby windshield is glued in or not, but my MkII was glued in and my passat is glued in....and they both broke when i had them removed...the MkII was removed for paint, the passat was remove to replace with a new uncracked one
if its not glued in and its just the seal that holds it in like an aircooled, you can replace it no problem, just put the seal on the glass and put some nylon cord around the perimeter, set the glass in place and have a friend put some minimal pressure on the glas to keep it in place, the pull the cordthrough the openening to set the seal....ive done it several times on my aircooleds

couple hundred, and they are press in. only the 90 series has a glued in windshield....But if your windshield has been replaced before it may be glued too.

Re: windshield repair or replace?
An '87 uses the rubber seal.
The seal is about $30. at most places.
You might find good glass at a wrecker, but new, probably $150 range.
If you are taking one out of a wreck, cut the seal first. then try to push out the glass from the inside.
Rabbit windshields fit, so they are still available.

Re: windshield repair or replace?
The '87s are press-ins. Additionally, there are two windshield seals available: with or without the moulding groove. If you want to keep the "chrome" moulding around the windshield, be sure to get the seal that gets its groove on.

Re: windshield repair or replace?
I had the windshield on my Jetta replaced a few months ago. Cost: "Nothing" thanks to State Farm's glass coverage and AZ law.

That's where AZ law comes into play (I think FL has the same one): deductible or not, insurance pays for 1 windshield replacement per year (provided it's damaged).

damn that'd be nice....i wish Washington would get that law along with the insurance caps like california has.
i pay more for six months with one car than i did in cali for my GLI and my sportbike for a year.....and not by little, i pay alot more.
my insurance in cali was 420 a year here in Washington i pay 580 for 6 months
