HELP -- Rabbit won't go!

Post by leah's_dad »

I posted this in the VWVortex forum but it was suggested I post it here, too. My '83 convertible had a problem starting. It would crank, catch, run for a split second and then die. Over and over. Someone suggested it was running off the cold start valve and to check for fuel flow. The pump and filter are new, and I replaced the fuel distributor unit with a known good used one. Now it will start and run, but won't idle. And it has absoultely no power when you try to drive it and won't rev freely.

HELP!

Not being a CIS knowledgable, I would suspect that you have a vacuum leak. I would start by replacing all the vacuum hoses, and making sure that the rubber boot from the airbox to the Throttle body is in good shape.

If a check valve is bad you could be pulling air from the heater select switch.

Someone more knowledgable on CIS will be sure to post.

OK...all vacuum lines are new and the air hose to the TB looks fine. I checked it when I took it off of the fuel distributor. And I double-checked the vacuum hose routing with the diagram on the underside of the hood and it seems dead on.

Where is the check valve? Is that the one off the TB?

Nope...didn't know about that. Funny thing, there was a tiny allen wrench poking out of the hole in the old unit. Guess the previous owner was on to something.

Problem with this is the car won't stay running at idle to do these tests. If I have someone keep it at 2000 rpm, will this still work?

Did you check the injectors? That car has been sitting for a long time and I am sure they may have gotten clogged.

I thought about that...and there is another set that came with the car that have been soaking in cleaner forever.

How exactly do they come out?
