Motor to the top is not working

Post by cholos2 »

Friends.

Hey Guys, I havent posted here in quite a while since I changed jobs. AS a result the Wifey's 99 Cab is showing some wear.

Has anybody had the motor that draws and closes the conv top go bad. I can still hear it running when I hit the switch, but its not drawing the top. What do you guys think would be the most likely cause? I havent seen any huge fluid leaks or anythinglike that, but I also don't know much about the mechanism itself...like what cable pulls what.

Any help appreciated.

sorry man, don't know much about the newer cabs.
If you can't beat them, drop the top and pimp by 'em!

OK I think I may have something. I took the cover off the motor, and found some sort or cylinder or resevoir with MAx and min markings. The fluid or oil in there was below min, so Im guessing thts what it is. Im gonna pick up some of whatever it is and try and refill it myself. Any hints on how to do it? There seems to be a bolt at the top of the motor. I think if I take it off that might be the place to put a funnell or something. If any body reads this anytime soon and knows that this is the wrong thing to do, reply immediately. I've stated before that I am not the most mechanically inclined fellow, but that doesnt stop me from trying to messa round with crap.

Well that didnt work. After filling up the fluid and moving the top up and down to get some if it in the system the top still doesnt retract or extend automatically. I dont wanna take it to a dealer or a mechanic :x but I might have to.

Well at least we can still take the top down and put it back up manually.

Followup.

FYI
Consulted a very knowledgable VW mech here in NC. He deduced that it was the pump on the conv motor that wasnt working. It wasnt pumping the fluid through.

So off to the junkyard or the "re-furb" yard, to replace the motor and pump
