Wahoo, the tierod end socked came in. Hopefully this weekend i will spend a little time with the Rabbit
Does anyone in Rabbit land have one with the aftermarket ac, where the ac is on top of the alternator? If so could you take a picture of how you tighten the fan belt! I cannot figure it out. Found it on Samba
I am thinking it is a shim thing... that is IIRC.....
You insert shims between the pulleys....

Yes as matter of fact, I have the Luck o'the Irish...everything I touch turns to fertilizer of the bovine variety. You can lead a user to a link, but you can't make him Click....
Thanks Brian, I found a picture on Samba and I am missing a pulley. It was there originally because the belt was on it, so I took it off and put it somewhere for safe keeping. This weekend I will look in the boxes of parts that I have
Yesterday I was able to install the new ball joints and control arm bushings. On the bushings I first tried the C-Clamp method but it kept slipping off. Then I tried the long bolt method and it worked like a charm.
Glad the long bolt worked for you, it never fails for me either. The trouble with the "C" clamp is that as you tighten it, the torque on the foot can spin it off.

So I have been having a problem pressing on the sway bar bushings. No matter what I did I could not get them to slide on, so I took them to my in-laws over the holidays. I used my father-in-laws "man vise" instead of my little boy vise to hold it then used the C-clamp and it went right on. I need me a man vise! Hopefully the weather will clear up and I can start putting it back together
Yesterday was a good day for the Rabbit. The passenger side front end is all put back on. Drivers side is another story. Stupid tie rod end. The socket and impact wrench did not take it off! It looks like it is back to the heat and pipe wrench
Back to the saga of the tie rod end. So I tried the impact socked and no luck, heated it and again no luck. Time for the big tools I got out the dremel and cut off disks. Cut the end off then made a cut completely down the one side. /spray PB Blaster put the wrench on it and it just spins. Made a cut down the other side and it comes off. WTH there are no threads on the tie rod or the tie rod end, it had been pressed on! Now I need to get another tie rod because the end I have is threaded
Some one installed or it was still an original one piece tie-rod. VW used a one piece tie-rod on the passenger side.
That is the inner and outer were considered a non separate replaceable unit.
When the outer goes bad you have to replace it with a two piece inner and outer.
But you can go back with the newer two piece units, that is a inner, and a separate outer. Usually these older cars have already had the rod replaced and they go back with the 2 piece, it could be that they used a one piece.

Yeah, this is the drivers side. I will just get the tie rod, I already have the tie rod end and luckily the tie rods like a lot of parts on the Rabbits are pretty cheap

Tell me about it, when I woke it was about 7 degrees, it isn't supposed to get above 32 today.... Farging Canadian cold fronts, there ought to be a Tax on them...
