The past week in Car repair

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Finally got around to replacing the one piece valve cover gasket "again" on the green cabby. It had a tiny leak at the base of the cam that spit oil on the exhaust, which then would enter the cabin via the fresh air intake. I fixed it by using a little bit of Silly-cone at the base of the cam over. So that the corners were sealed inside the valve cover and to the head itself.

Fixed the Prndl light, as well as re-adjusted the Steering wheel ( which I did wrong and now will have to reposition it "again".)..damnits....

Re: The past week in Car repair**Countdown to Summer**

Post by CalAltaDubber »

Well I looked out the window on Monday and saw the beautiful weather, so I decided to start my semi-annual car care frenzi. The goal is to have the two bunnys back home and in the garage this coming week end.

First on the list was to swap out the winter tires for the summer ones on the Wagon and the Golf. DONE

Next I have been procrastonating the repair I had to make to the driver's seat in Topless Bunny. One of the boden cables for the relase was broken. Since the seat has been in the garage since I parked the car last October, I decided to fix that last night. DONE

Now I need to check the batteries for the two bunnys, and make sure that they are in good operating condition. NEXT

Saturday begins the heavy lifting, I will have to haul the wheels and tires out of the basement. I will also have to find where I left all the stuff like wind deflectors and other interior goodies I keep in them. Coming Up

Then the part where I go to the farm and Install the batteries, install the driver's seat in Topless Bunny start them and ferry them home. Getting Excited!

Then will be the task of cleaning, installing the summer wheels, and prepping. Then it will be time for a Guiness (or some other gold coloured beverage)!

Gee and all I did today was to replace an a/c compressor and drier in a neighbors Monte Carlo.

Very nice Phil. Brian, we expect such things from you, lol. Not much for me. I don't know if I said something or not, but I got the new job and start on the 15th. My TDI is actually at the dealship due to a battery drain that they suspected and I confirmed. The dealer (Nalley VW in Alpharetta) is eating the cost of the repairs, I didn't have to say a word. They gave me a loaner 2013 Passat for the trouble. I'll pick my TDI back up this coming Saturday.

For now, it's looking like May will be when I start attacking Crabby Cabby. She has a small laundry list of parts that she needs and then there is the list of wants. I'm going to try and get them both knocked out this summer. Case in point, if anyone knows of or comes across a nice 2Y or AGB trans, please let me know. This super short, custom geard FF thats in it now needs to go.

Well things went pretty good for tHe most part.

I found all the stuff I needed. I even brought the air compressor along (I new there would be at least one flat tire).

The battery for Topless Bunny was shot. :? So I made a trip to Canadian tire for a new one.

Any way, both bunnies are now home and in the garage. Since the weather was so crappy (OK who ordered the snow) I haven't gotten around to changing the wheels for the summer ones. But that is something I can do later this week.

The only issue I have between them is; the coolant gauge in Posh Bunny won't stop flashing, and won't move. I guess I have some troubleshooting to do.

In short, not time to celebrate yet. But at least I have them home.

Finally got all the stuff together for the two bunnys, got the summer tires on and even got to go for a test drive in them.

Then it began to snow. :rmad:

I'm waiting for the snow to melt and I will take some pictures.

Put new door latch pins. The old ones had the plastic ring totally gone. Took a while to find them.

Installing all 3 layers on a 86, install the bumper ends front, and the trim on the passengers side.
Had to replace the top latch receivers as they were bent and broken. Eccentrics were out of whack and the J-hooks needed to be re-adjusted. Oiled the hinge points, replaced both the drivers and passenger door handles so I could open a door with out having to use the vent wing. Making progress, I might even do a DIY on the headliner. Oh made a Radiator Card, and replaced the original radiator to res hose as it wasn't much longer for this world.

Oh I have got all 3 layers removed...tomorrow the seals and trays. The top was sitting about 1/2 inch raised in the front because of the eccentrics and the receivers being out of spec. The Trays have a nice bead of silicone, I guess with the 1/4 inch crack in the front window seal as the top wasn't down was a problem?
