~ Exterior Fuel pump on 90 - replacement question

Hi everyone this is my second time replacing the exterior pump on my 90 Cabbie - I read somewhere that you can switch the OEM exterior with another OEm from Chevrolet or???


any ideas? any help? would be appreciated.....

Yes there is a 80 dollar external pump, but there is also a 80 dollar conversion that allows you to remove the "in-tank" pump and external pump and all the bs hoses.
Then the pump is only 50 bucks or so from then on.

It is noiser.... You hear it all the time.

Parts used:
E3210 55 bucks
6 foot of 5/15 fuel line 6 bucks
8 hose clamps 4 bucks
Wix 33321 filter 12 bucks.

Thanks Briano! I decided to go with the original 2 pump setup. Your article on the in tank pump replacement will help a lot. Hopefully replacing both pumps will solve the "bogging" problem I've been having. Doesn't matter what speed the car will (sometimes) hesitate (like it's starving for fuel) for a second then pick back up and keep right on going. The engine never goes dead. Last week it was idling lower than normal and was kind of erratic and sluggish but once again, never died. I did notice a fuel pump growling at me that day but I haven't been able to make it repeat the noise although it still idles lower than normal and is erratic. Basically I'm not brave enough to drive it further than I can push it back so maybe it has to get hot to growl or it's now dead. I've moved and shook hoses under the hood but the idle stayed the same. It has a new fuel filter. Does this sound like a fuel pump issue to you?

I would check the fuel pressure at the rail. It is possible that your fuel pressure regulator is iffy.
If you drive repeatedly on a 1/4 tank or less you can toast your in-tank pump.... and that will cause the external pump to whine.

I'll do that. I drive 200 miles then fill up. That leaves around 5+ gallons in the tank. Of course, who knows how many times it was run on empty before I got it.
