The past week in Car repair

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Repair time.

I noticed a wet spot on the floor of the garage the other day. It was right where the Raggit's right rear wheel sits when parked in the garage. I thought I better check it out... Sure enough the rim and tire are wet. Brake cylinder.... I haven't taken the wheel off yet, I'll do that on Tuesday when I'm off. But, I'm 99.9% sure that is what it is. So I'll be on the hunt for one. I'll start at the local VW Dealer. Now that means that I'll have two chunks of cardboard under it. One for the oil leak under the engine ( to be repaired this winter. ) and now one under the tire. ( to be repaired ASAP )

Got the oil cooler installed, but alas I didn't know that I would have to start the body work to pull the valance out.... But on a side note, I don't have to do as much as I thought..... I can cut out the old and weld in a new valance piece....
It is getting that fender loose from the son of satan glue.....

Oh oil change plugs and filter.

I used an off the wreck Volvo 740 T with intercooler. It is thermostatically controlled which means that until the car warms up it isn't being used.
The oil hose was the most expensive part.

Along with the oil cooler you will need a 0-ring, and that I went to a Plumbing supply store (not home depot) and they matched up an o-ring.
The heat exchanger was off a Chevrolet Full Sized van with a Transmission oil cooler. There are 4 types that I have seen. 1 is huge, 1 is medium with fittings, and then there is a lower profile one that is still about 12 rows and it fits nicely in to the grille.

I used Gas Pipe Teflon Tape for all connections.
I used Oil cooler transmission hose bulk bought from Autozone.
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1892

The Volvo oil cooler is held in place by a 28mm nut. You will need a deep well socket, I used a 1 5/32 inch that I had from plumbing work to remove it.
I then went to the wrecking yard and found a VW with oil cooler and took the filter off and grabbed the 27mm nut, take 2 there small.

You will also need the Volvo feed through pipe. To remove it take the nut and place it on the threads till it is flush with the end of the tube. Using a small pair of vice grips internally and hooked on the nut, you can take the pipe out. You can also grab the pipe in the middle or right below the cooler as there is the dead zone that the oil cooler covers up.

The brass fittings and barb connections were all bought at the BORG.
And are listed in the link above

This might shock you, but try Canadian Tire or a place like Bumper to Bumper, UAP, or Parts Source first. They will have them cheaper than the dealership. Usually they have stuff like that in stock, if not, next day.

Thanks for the tip. I called Canadian Tire and they can have for me overnight a package of two Monroe Brake Wheel Cylinders for $39.99 plus taxes. I'll call around tomorrow to see if there are any other parts stores that may have them.

Thanks again.

The project is finished! Well you know what I mean, project cars are NEVER finished. But the project that created Posh Bunny is now finished.

I spent this afternoon installing the amp and rear speaker boxes and finished the deck lid. Now I can say that Posh Bunny is a Cabriolet Roadster.

I'll take some pictures and upload them this week.

Now I have to turn my attention back to Topless Bunny, there are a few minor things that have to be attended to keep her in tip top shape.

No problem, That's just something I have learned over the last few years.

Here in Calgary, there is an auto parts chain called Auto Value. Generally they have the best prices.

SWEET!!!!!!! I never realized the pride of ownership with these cars, until I bought one. I have had a few classic North American cars over the years. But none compare to the fun and enjoyment I have had in the short time I have owned mine. I could go on, but I am sure everyone in this forum understands what I'm saying. :D

Thanks Doug.
Yes the pride of ownership is very strong in these cars. Having owned the '87 (Topless Bunny) since new and four, or is it five years building this one (it was really crying for help when I bought it) I do take pride in both cars. And yes, I do get a lot of comments on them both.

Installed a 3-window tent:

Image
Crappy pic and bitch of a job; bottom perimeter was a touch too small, which resulted in an almost-torn seam and the rear bungee/elastic having to be cut.

Image :rmad:

Other than the imperfect fit, it's delightful having side windows.
