Cv joint and axle, lower control arm replacement

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

You also may want to check out the wheel bearing.

1. You will need a 8mm triple square driver to take the axles off the cup. Be sure to clean the heads of the bolts and fully seat the tool in the bolts with a tap or 2 of a hammer. If you don't you will strip them.

2. You will need a 30mm 6pt 1/2 inch drive socket to remove the axle nut, and a large breaker bar and extender (cheater). Loosen the nut while the car is on the ground first, in gear or park with the parking brake on.

3. With the car in Neutral, rotate the axle to get the bolts, you can lock it in place by using the rotor and a straight slot screw driver wedged between the caliper and the rotor vanes.
Image tapping the tool home with the rotor locked with a screw driver.

4. Buy new axles from German auto parts, I had cardone remans both break 1 to 2 weeks after the installation, the last one smacked the differential so bad it ruined the differential. I had to drop the trannd and change it out.

5. You didn't say if it was the drivers side or not, but if you have a Automatic transmission you will have to jack the transmissions up to clear the control arm bolt.

6. For the oil pan you will need a 10mm 1/4 6pt socket and a wobble extension to get to the bolts between the Transmission and the engine.

7. buy the upgraded gasket from German auto parts well worth it.
You can get new EMPI axles from there too, as well as the 8mm ts driver.

I bought my control arm kit off of ebay, came with the mounts, and lower ball joint. You have to take the ball joint loose from the strut to change the axles anyway.

Hi and welcome to TRF

Brian has laid out about 98% of what you need to know. The job is pretty easy to do. You didn't mention if the strut was damaged, but it's worth looking it over to make sure it is OK.

One thing Brian didn't mention is you will need to do an allignment when you are done.

Finally, as we always say, if you don't have a Bently manual for your car, It's worth the money to get one. They are the best manuals for these cars.

Keep us informed as to your progress.

Both at the same time, the ball joint should be loose from the strut when doing the axle, so why not do the axle, then the lower control arm.
