The past week in Car repair

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

None for me and today I gave all the VW's and the audi the middle finger and rode the FJR around. I think I'll do it again tomorrow.

Blue bunny, replaced the fuse for the ciggie lighter. Repaired the connector for the lower console lights, and changed the Spark plugs. :) Wish I had a set of the NGK BP6ET but only had a set of the single trodes.... but actually they did pep that sucker up...

We pulled the old motor mount on the passenger side. Getting new one pressed in tomorrow. Also did new rings and bearings. All day job. That motor mount was a PITA.

Well, most things are working well, but Posh Bunny decided to give me a few problems with the passenger door solenoid. After troubelshooting the whole door opener system I determined that the solenoid itself was operating intermittantly. Well after getting hold of the manufacturer, I find I can get a replacment for $75. plus shipping.

Damn, the whole system was only $150. new. :( Well had to expect something.

Next week I start prepping Topless Bunny and Posh Bunny for winter storrage.

Well, I may be making a road trip in the Cabby, and I decided to check it out, and I noticed that the radiator res was low....

Couldn't see any weak hose, or loose one, replaced the water outlet flange on the drivers side with metal.

So I broke out the UV light, there under the front water outlet flange was tale-tell green a/f residue.

I changed out the flange, with a spare I bought about 6 months ago....
As I was getting it out, the bolts were a little loose, but I couldn't see any cracks on the old one but the "o-ring" looked to be a little off.

Found the mystery knows it my power steering pump belt, (wd-40) and it quieted... so I have to check that out, but all in all, its ready.....

4 bucks.....

Ok, I am about ready to flip the car the bird. Today the Valve cover gasket goes on the blue bunny... ok I have a new one as a spare.... Note to self... remember the windage tray.... I hate having to take it all apart... this time I only had 4 nuts on the cover.....

The 5 1/5" 8X1.50mm bolt that holds the power steering pump at the pivot decided to leave my car... Holy crap... I can't find it, but my true-value had one.

Then on the test drive I smoked one of those GIECO squirrels... (good riddance to those Tree Rats.).

But I don't have to make a road trip, so I guess that is something....positive.

I think you need to become one with some blue locktite my friend. Maybe the bolts won't leave if they have some hold-fast on them?

Does that work over "Never-Seize"?

I have the fix, A nylon lock nut.

Cab is running well, so the work to be done is Westy work: Cleaned up the ground locations, replaced the two main ground cables, cleaned up the alternator connections, removed and cleaned the ISV, cleaned up a few other electrical connections in the engine bay as well. I then moved on to the kill switch (van nearly left me stranded at Home Depot two weeks ago; isolated the problem to the kill switch and/or wiring). The problem: corroded and nearly fried wire. Just replace the wire, right? Nooooo... the damn switch has mini disconnect terminals, and finding a 10-gauge mini disconnect is almost impossible. So, that means getting rid of the kill switch, or wire in a new switch. I'm opting for the new switch route, leaving the old one in place for a "dummy switch" and hiding the new one. Now, I just need to find a place to mount this new switch!

Go out to the Garage about 10 minutes after coming home, and the Radiator return line is spewing......
Glad I usually cut it long.... Trimmed about 10 inches off of it, and I am good to go, for the moment.

I discovered the reason the garage smells like gas all the time is the gas tank in the '88 Cabriolet is leaking somewhere above the rear seam...gonna call the VW dealer this week and see if I can talk them into honoring a 17-year-old recall on a 23-year-old car. If not I've got some soul searching to do, because that looks like a real pain in the butt job, and it's a $800 car.

That's a tough one. my '77 did the same thing a few years back. I found a "like new" tank at a local wrecker that specializes in VW and swapped out the old tank. It wasn't that bad, but it is necessary to drop the rear axle to get the tank out. The tank cost me about $150.

This past week end was an excercise in frustration. I was changing the oil on the Posh Bunny when I noticed one of the screws that hold the inner CV boot to the flange on the trans axel was loose and sticking out. OK, I figure I will just tighten it up and check the rest of them at the same time. As I was checking the rest of the screws I knocked over the gallon jug of motor oil.

Great! Now I get to clean that mess up and don't have any oil for the car. Well thank god for kitty litter to clean up the mess. Ended up getting more oil yesterday and now Posh Bunny runs like a charm.

On another note, the solenoid I ordered for the door has made it's way to Calgary. UPS in their infinate wisdom charges me another 50% of the purchase price in "Brokerage Fees" and couldn't get to me. It took two extra days to find it and get it to their warehouse here so I could pick it up. In short I figured that UPS really means "Universally Poor Service". There is no way I will ever entertain using them again.

In the end, both the bunnys are in great shape and I am putting them up for the winter this week end.
