Just as an FYI for those that may ever think about doing your own rear window replacement. There are two straps that connect to the window on the inside top part of the frame. Those two straps run all the way to the front of the top. Now I haven't seperated the headliner from the top assym yet to see how to go about removing them, but if I do, I will take some pics.
This is more of an FYI if you ever need to replace that rear window. I also haven't looked close enough to see if there is some way that the window comes out of that frame a bit, So that might be a possibility as well.

from PDX's last post in this section:
Place the palm of you hand, with as much surface area of your hand contacting the glass as possible, on the rear window at the upper corner. PUSH. The glass will slowly start to come out of the seal and will come right out after you release the initial hold of the seal.

That is correct, I have had my out twice in the last month and it pushes right out. Take a good strong twine and wrap around it about three times and it goes right back in. Cabrioworld has new rubber seals reasonably priced if you need a better seal. The metal frame has a tendency to rot around the bottom and the straps only hold it at the top. It has hinges at the bottom and that is usually where you find the rust. VW priced a new frame somewhere in the $300.00 range. I think I could repair or completely make one cheaper than that. Good luck.

Word of warning: Measure your rear window frame for the top replacement. Measure with the top off, with the frame closed and locked. Make sure that you have the same distance on both bottom corners. I didn't and assumed that it was correct. Low and behold my top is at 3 and a half on the right and 4 and a half on the left.
I didn't notice till after I had it half stapled to the frame.
Cheers
