Rare, did you say rare? I got a fastback and a squareback body sitting in my yard collecting dust and other things.

Up here in the Northeast fastbacks are rare. A lot of people my age (old)
have never even seen a fastback and darn few squarebacks. Type 3 are
not as rare as Type 4 but still not a usual sight.

Lol Six, you must have worked to hard today. I'm not the one with the sandrail, that would be VW_Nick, I just made the comment that I also had a fastback. I'd love to have a dune buggy but I'd probably never see it again for my husband taking it on joy rides.

I think the rare Type 3 is the donor car for the sand-rail. Too bad, since I too have never seen one of the Type 3 fastbacks in person either (must be a Maine thing).

Yes, the t3 is for parts supplying me with a 1600 dual port, a spare transmission, larger rear brakes if I wanted to go to 4 lug, a shifter, a steering gear box, tie rod ends that may or may not be the same lentgh... it's almost a shame, but it's not worth saving by mid-southern standards.

The rear end around the engine is all rotted out - as in, missing about 4" around the paremeter of where the engine sits. The left heater channel is totally rotten, you can squash it with your hand. Floor pans are fair... probably worth saving. If it was up north it would be missing about 8" of it all the way around. You northern guys don't know how rough you have it. (I moved here to TN from VT, so I've been there, and tried to, but wound up scrapping, that)

I'm planning on cutting the rear axle out of it, so I might go as far as saving the floors off it. It has pretty good tail lights and some good interior do-dads, but that's about it. the front end is not T1 or T2, balljoint front arms.. spindles will not work with T1, so nothing to get excited about as far as the disc brakes go, but I'm going to keep the calipers to possibly use on the rear of the rail someday. I've got the engine out and all the cooling tin off it, some pieces are thin in a few places but useable and I'm not sure there are aftermarkets in production. Maybe for bucks since the T1 stuff is dime a dozen.

I am pretty sure we used to use T3 front steering knuckles and discs
on Beetles. There may have been an adapter or two but I think we did.
Somebody out there must have a better memory than I do.

Fun-looking little project there. Too bad about the Fastback, though. I see one every now and again out on the road here in AZ, but it is a rare sighting; Squarebacks are just a hair more common here, but they're a rare sighting as well. There is, ironically enough, a nice dark blue Fastback that lives up the street from me (it spends most of its time in its garage).

Wow, that car's so rusty it barely casts a shadow. At least part of it will live on in your sandrail.

actually, turns out I'll probably only use the rear drum brakes off the type 3, and have the steering gearbox as a spare. Why? B/c for $100 I bought a '72 super beetle w/ the rear clip (including parcel shelf!) cut off it. Voila, IRS
