The past week in Car repair

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Back to what this thread is supposed to be about.

I fixed my e/brake for the 900th time today, rotated the tires, adjusted the left rear wheel bearing
changed the oil, topped off all the fluids and checked the front end on my cabby tonight before
coming in to make dinner.

Found a bushing and a ball joint on the New Beetle that need attention then got it registered and
insured today. We think the agent may have screwed up though, charged us $72.00 for the year
for insurance. :screwy: Took it's maiden voyage this afternoon with my Dad to my son's school.
My father really liked it. I wish he would just go out and get the BMW Z3 that he's wanted.

Tomorrow I put new ball joints in my daughters Golf, a right axle and diagnose the alarm problem
that keeps setting itself. I think I'll try the VagCom on it and see if I get anywhere.

last week I replaced the non-functioning oil temperature sensor.

today I've removed the instrument cluster to fix a bulb, and try to repair the old temperature gauge and reinstall it so it has one that's reading properly in it. (theory is that the current cis gauge goes off a different resistance curve vrs the digifant sender and it constantly reads 3/4 rather than 1/2

list of stuff to do before bap:

LF wheel bearing (dust shield goes EeeEEeEEeeeEEee - lubing helps for about a week)
alignment
tachometer illumination bulb
temperature gauge
brake light bulb that you guys always complain is too dim
try to find a new right door handle bezel
line up water pump pulley better to quiet belt noise (about 1mm off)
recharge a/c
consider moving oil psi sender to filter flange a-la 16v engines to monitor main galley rather than cylinder head galley (though yes, I do understand the rules about pressures within a hydraulic system)
repair left window motor. I have it out and have a plan to repair the broken bolt boss

Nick, sounds like you have a pretty good list going there. We still don't know what all will be making the trip up with us. So I'm thinking it will just have to be a surprise, even if it's just the cabby and Jetta like usual.

original instrument cluster temp gauge repaired & installed.. still have to put the dash back together
foam installed on left dash vent valve
driver's window motor repaired & remounted, driver's door panel vinyl re-reglued and door reassembled.

these are all things I could have done ages ago had I taken the time to do it...

wife's vehicle: wiper blade inserts installed, engine air filter replaced, seat belt bolt trim cover installed, floor mats installed.

Well, lets see. Most recent progress was getting the exhaust in, rear end bolted back up. Have the ac compressor in place, temp intake system figured out, and one side of the rear brakes torn down. Seems I have a carrier bolt that doesn't want to seperate from it's home for the last 21 years. I'm so close to having this car running and now little stupid crap is cropping up left and right. :banghead:

I spent the week end puttering in the basement with a few things for the project car.

I am going to the bodyshop tomorrow to see how the car is. It should be in primer by now. :)

I had Great luck on a "frozen" bolt...... CRC Freeze-off, sprayed on the back and the front of the bolt... allow to work for 5 minutes, then I resprayed the bejeezers out of it againm and used my cordless Impact on it.... a few da da da da da's later and the bolt spun right out.

Get off work at 7:00am
Wait to 5 minutes before 8:00

Take the license plate off the cabby and place it on my new Van to get it inspected....
Run buy and get a filter for it, pay my car shop 10 bucks to change the oil, I furnished the oil and filter...
Get to the emissions station, and the car won't pass the inspection..... Bad ODB fuse... okay find the fuse and replace it. TA-DA emissions passed.

Run to the Tag office, and WTF it moved.
Go to the new place and yep Closed on Mondays.... I shoulda gone to bed.

I replaced the smashed fog lamps on the Beetle last night with cheapies from WalMart. Aftermarket originals were $120.00, Wallyworld $20.00. After talking with one of my customers about the ineffectiveness of the originals it seemed like a reasonable compromise.

Sunday afternoon I replaced the wiper motor and transmission in my daughter's Golf with a used one from a parts car.

I think I saved enough money just this week to go out and buy a couple of tires for the Beetle.

So I am super close to having the rocco finished. Need to install the axle shafts, sway bar, K-bar and my end of things is done. All I need now is for my engine harness guru to come back from Fla to finish that up and it should be a complete running car again. Will have some pics up soon, it's really starting to look like something again.

Well pics would be nice of a project that has been that long in the making. But far be it from me to deter you in your quest for a running rocco in my request for pictorial evidence to support your alleged closeness... :)

Glad it is finally coming to-gether
