good convertible top guy in south Jersey
Does anyone know a good mechanic to repair a convertible top in South Jersey. I just bought my first vw, an '86 cabriolet. I'm excited to pick your brains to get this project on the road.

Welcome to TRF.
Congratulations on the purchase of the '86.
Just what is the problem with your top?
Generally upolstry shops do convertable top repair work.
But, there is lots of good information right here on TRF. Our own Briano1234 could easily be called the expert. He provides lots of good information on repair and maintenance to convertable tops.
Why don't you post a picture or two of your car?
Again welcome to TRF.

I'll work on that picture. Thanks for the response. Can you recommend a repair manual to me?

The Bently manual for Cabriolets is "sparce" on top repair.
If you are replacing the top I highly recomend this one. http://www.cabby-info.com/Files/TopReplacementDIY.pdf
For other repairs, a good place to start is http://www.cabby-info.com/how-to.htm
Kamy has links to a lot of HOW-to places for top repair.

Kammy's isn't the most current, but they are here:

There are other ones that are available at Kammy's sight and the more that you look at the better off you are
when installing your top.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask, and if I feel like answering them I will
Doing a top isn't that hard, there are just things you need to do and a order to doing them.

I'll second that. It seems intimidating when you look at the whole project, but it's really not that bad. There are a lot of steps, but each individual step is not difficult.Briano1234 wrote: Doing a top isn't that hard, there are just things you need to do and a order to doing them.
One tip: As you take apart the old top, take lots of photos with a digital camera. Those photos will be very useful to you later when you're putting the new one together.
