Re: house hunting is the suck
the majority of the houses i am finding here in Cali that are decent are in really crappy neighborhoods there is the exception, but for the most part they are in the mexican gang infested places.
there are condos in nice areas, but after seeing an acquaintances car after another car in his condos caught on fire and burned three other cars it kinda steers me away from condos

Prices there are unreal. You could get something pretty nice out here so long as it's in the sticks, but all metro areas are priced pretty high. Good luck to you, I hope that the current downturn in the market works in your favour and you are able to find something nice.

Re: house hunting is the suck
Home prices in SoCal are just absolutely, positively absurd. My parents bought their 1700 square-foot house in Pasadena back in 1973 for around $35,000. They could've sold it in the mid-'80s for around $1 million. They finally decided to move to AZ last year and sold the house for around $850,000. Uncle Sam LOVES old-time SoCal residents who sell... hello capital gains taxes!!
I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find a good deal somewhere!
