Starter

Post by Caddycabby »

So I replaced my starter with a new one from partsource (never going there again) after a faulty solenoid. The thing starts fine most of the time but sometimes it just doesn't go. There is a constant 12V from the battery terminal and the 12V from the ignition cylinder when the key is turned But still Nada. No Click. Just no starting. I dont know why but this usually happens after my car has sat on a hot day in direct sunlight. :?

I want to return it but they have to check it first and it will probably check just fine. Any ideas?

first, clean all the grounds to the Engine and the tranny, make sure there is a good ground between the tranny and the Strut ground.

Then you probably need the hwt soak relay for an automatic. Basically you are taking the solenoid hot and running it directly to the starter and using the 12 from the switch to pick a relay.

On the tex there is a heat soak thread, I think on cabbyinfo.com too.

I don't think I understood anything you just told me except checking grounds. Sorry. What relay are we talking here?

Glean the connections on all your grounds.

And installing the heat soak relay for your starter.

So tha tthe solenoid draws power straight from the battery and not via the switch.

might be your starter too, i have a bad spot on mine. when it won't go try jumping from the battery to the starter to see if it turns, then try to start the car. that's the prob. i have right now. if you're like me and don't have the cash flow for a new starter (or time for that matter), you can put your car in gear, turn the key to start it with the clutch out and when it starts push the clutch in, if you time it right it'll start if that's your prob.

Tony,

I have a couple of used starters, that are good as far as I know. Do you want to try one of them to prove out the problem?

I got a chance to play with it while it wasn't working and it isn't the starter I jumped a wire straight from the battery and it started right up. so its probably the brand new ignition cylinder? YA NO?

wow, thanks for that but I determined it was a faulty ignition switch and took it back to C1 randy admitted they (c1) had put a cheapy one in there when they did the job. So they installed another one straight from the dealer they say and still charged me 100 bucks. I'm not a big fan of arguing so i didn't. I don't really want to go back to C1 anymore for service so I'm gonna try and find some place different. Hopefully i can fine some place cheaper and better... Sigh.... maybe its just wishfull thinking

I would of gone postal on them, I would of offered to pay the difference between the cost of the old part and the new one, but I wouldn't of dared to think they could charge me for the same repair....

Maybe that is why I do most of my own work....

I don't do exhausts any more and I don't do tires... other than that who knows.
