Blinker craziness

Post by dubchickshubby »

Ok, here's a good one. My wife calls me and tells me that "thing 2" may have a blown left directional bulb since it's blinking twice as fast as normal. Then she gets out to see if it was front or back but both lights are ok. Hazards work normally as well.
Could this be water in the relay? Anyone come across this in the past?

could be, but I suspect a bad or flakey ground, had the same symptom on my cabby, and it was a bad ground on the rear directional light.

I second the ground issue.

I have also seen the bulbs fail internally and "cross" filaments inside.

I'VE seen this before. Since the relay controls both the turn indicator and the warning flasher it is not the cause.

It happened to me once, I had I would suggest reseating the connectors where the bulbs are (the front is more likley in my expierence).

keep in mind that most blinker bulbs have two filiments. One for regular blinking, and one of the emergency blinker. Can't remember if our beloved A1's have that or not, but if they do, would be worth checking.

A1s have two filiments in the bulb, one is for the running lights the other is shared between the indicator and hazard warning.

Most of the wiring for the turnsignals is shared with the Hazzard warning.

I've had to trouble shoot this on several cars so I have become very familiar with the schmatic.

Finally back from business. Thanks for the suggestions guys. Sure enough, it was just wiggling the bulb that fixed it right up.

Now, there's a nasty whirring noise (not quite a grinding sound) going on... Time to crack the Bentley and/or search for wheel bearing/auto tranny diagnostics.
