Speaker Wires?

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Speaker Wires?

Post by J-Dub »

Hey, I'm trying to run my mids/highs to an amp but I'm having a little trouble on tracing the wire for the front door speakers can anybody tell me where to find them?

They run from the speaker to the flex tube that goes in between the door and the door frame and then from there, hell it's anyone's guess, but somehow they snake their way up to the headunit area. Only true way to know is to pull the dash I think.

If you have an aftermarket radio in the car, see if you can pull it out (be real carfull, some installers don't leave much wire slack) there is usually a diagram on the radio that tells you which colored wires go to what speakers.

Or you an go all out and just re-run all the wiring with better grade speaker wire and yank all the stock crappy wires out. Takes longer and can be a biznatch but is worth it. I was lazy and just clipped the old crap back to a point where I couldn't get to it anymore.

Actually I just installed a new head unit as well so I'll just pull it back out and try to get to them that way, I wish there was another way. I just finished putting my dash back together

The Bentley manual will tell you what color wires you are looking for. Pull the speaker out of the door and pull the head unit. You can then run a continuity test on the wires to make sure you are dealing with the ones you want. I just did this to a Volvo 740 with no manual and a factory amp. 4 hours later the stereo sounded great.

I work 8 to 5 at my "real" job and then go home and turn wrenches until I can't make valid diagnosis anymore and go to bed. Yep, work on everything, Dad fills in during the day doing little stuff like light electrical and cleaning parts etc. and then the fun begins at night. I have been blessed with facilities and some skills and I just can't seem to say no. I wish I could get some more Cabby work but there just isn't that many around. Lots of Jetta's and Golf's though.

We need people like you down here.... I don't know of anyone that does at home work on Cabby's... or VW's period other than the Stealership. I know of one guy, and he is mechanic at the dealership, but he is damn busy all the time!!

It's a damn shame your way the hell up north. I think between the two of us, we could have a hell of a shop. But then again, I don't know if I could enjoy fixing other peoples cars for a living. Not taking payment gives me the ability to say, "hell no I'm not working on that tetnis machine". :D

Yeah I'm with you on the refusing work scenario. When I had my house in Mass. I had just gotten to the point of having people drive in and just shaking my head. I had BMW's, MB's, Volvo's, VW's, Saab's and the like and was enjoying the success. Now I'm pretty much starting over and working on everything. I need to educate my customers and start getting them to make better decisions. I did it before and I'll do it again. Already a lot of people are buying Toyota's, Honda's and VW's that would have bought Escort's and Cavalier's before, so I am having some effect. FBG is of the opinion that I am way too hard on people when they buy junk, at this point I'm just so pissed off that they ask me my opinion and right me off as being prejudiced. Then they do whatever they want and bring it to me to repair. I hate that.

If somebody has been there before then all bets are off. What's the most common modification to do? A stereo and speakers.

In regards to mine, all 100% original: speakers, wires, head unit (except the speakers of course, which were just replaced 'cuz they were shot to hell).

That's strange, I have found the Bentley's to be accurate. Anomalies happen.
