No VW work

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

No VW work

Post by sixsracing »

I haven't had to turn a wrench on any of my VW's in a couple of weeks, I'm diagnosing a 4X4 AstroVan rear end noise tonight and I did an emergency caliper and rotor replacement on a Corolla the other night at 10:00 p.m., other than the Suzuki 4wheeler and the XR80 motor job my work load has been light. What's everyone working on?

Working on...nope, awaiting fixings. The Scirocco is garaged until her motor mounts are replaced. That is a big pain in the arse project so it is on hold until we figure out if we'd rather pay someone else for the trouble.

The Cabby has to wait until after the rocco vacates the garage bay. That, and the fact that the repairs that are left are mostly expensive ones, so of course that has to wait until the funds are there. I bought the speedo cable for one of the cheap fixes but found out that I need to get a new driven gear too, cause that is broken. And there is the cold start problem....ugh, it never ends.

i fixed my 1.8T oil light problem. the oil light has been coming on every once and awhile, so i checked the wiring, changed the oil pressure switch and it still came on, not all the time but it would come on and go right off.
so last weekend i dropped the oil pan... a lot of fun that was!
but i found that my oil pick-up tube was half way clogged with little balls of sludge  i change the oil every 3000-4000 miles!
so i pulled the oil pump and checked it out, it was fine, still within spec.
put it all back together and it's just like the day i bought her.
i now run synthetic oil in it.

lowcab, you probably already know this but for all the other readers out there, when you shut off a turbo car, the oil in the turbo will sit there and boil because it is no longer being cooled by the water running through the turbo. As the oil boils it "sludges'. This is why a lot of people install timers to keep their turbo cars running at idle for a short amount of time after they officially shut their cars off. This allows the coolant to flow through the turbo for a desired amount of time and gives the turbo and the oil in it time to cool to a point that the sludge would be minimized. Glad to hear you took the time to pull the pan, that would have been a nightmare if it got any worse.

i think that was the problem, my wife has been driving it for 3-4 months now and i forgot to tell her about the cool down time. when i was driving it i'd let it idle for a few minutes before shutdown.... i'm pretty sure she didn't . :D
the motor never made a noise, no clicking, ticking, knocking, nothing thank god. i think it was just enough of a drop in pressure to set the light off.

no, boost is better then displacement....way better!
i've had vr6's and don't get me wrong they are GREAT motors, but when you have a little 1.8-2.0 4 Cylinder on boost pulling away from v8s, thats bada$$ :D

Boost is better, but little 4 cyl. with no boost beating 8 cyl. is even sweeter. Yes, it can be done.

Hey, kuklaki, why would you spend money on a speedo cable for a Cabby. You know they eat them. It will be the only Cabby in existance that has a functional speedo. And I would hate to be the poor soul who has to put it in (and we all know who that might be). Also the oil light flickering...my 91 (non-turbo) gets an immediate additude when I install certain kinds of oil filters and even the buzzer scream O-chit. I simply change back to the other style filter and she takes a chill pill. I did not know I had a buzzer until I nearly T-boned a Bozo in Conyers. I cut the wheel hard one way then hard the otherway, went up on two wheels and did a 180. The buzzer started scream and I thought the car had an O-chit warning system of some kind. Like it was telling me to stop driving like a maniac. The next time it screamed O-chit is when I layed it hard into an exit curve, Then I was sure the car had some type of tip sensor or G sensor. She makes this same sound when I put a Mobile 1 oil filter on her. Maybe she is just screaming O-chit again. I never had a car tell me "Don't do that again".
