AC conversion
I am having the local dealership convert my cabby to R134a. They ordered the o-ring conversion kit, but not a new drier. The guy says you don't need to replace it. I thought you did, but don't really know anything about AC. Can someone confirm? Thanks

Well, they are dinking a bit. You really don't need to change the 0-rings... You don't need a dryer, but it is not a bad thing.
They need to drain the oil out of the compressor and replace the dryer. Then refill with pag oil, replace the 4-o-rings they take off and then
evac, and fill.
You only need a drier when you change out a compressor as they usually go hand in hand.
He is ordering about 450 0-rings as it is a universal kit usually, and they only will replace a few.
Be careful as if they aren't a good shop, they will tend to destroy your condensor removing the o-rings, and they won't change them in the evaporator or the valve as that would entail then taking your dash apart and removing your air box....
I wrote a how I converted mine how to, you can do it. Easily enough in the privacy of your back yard with a few tools and parts.....
Now you don't need a vacuum pump, but it depends on why yours is out of charge is it just low on freon?

Re: AC conversion
It's the local VW dealership that is doing the work. I know that's no guarantee of quality work, but I don't know anyone else. Wish me luck.

They don't call them stealerships for nothing......
My neighbor was qouted 1500 to 1700 to install a new compressor and dryer. 1998 Monte Carlo
I did it for about 150, +24 for the r134a, that includes me using my vacuum pump.
It have to be one of the easiest I have ever changed. My daughters HondaCivic I had to take the whole front bumper and crap off to get to hers.

Re: AC conversion
I know what you mean. He quoted me $300 for the conversion. Hopefully it won't be a fiasco.
