Replace starter

not sure what category this really goes under, but here goes. I need to replace the starter on my 91 carat. doesnt seem to be a hard find as all the major shops carry them. my only problem is which one. i have an automatic so that part's easy, but then it denotes that one starter uses the old style flywheel and another starter used the revised flywheel. I have no idea what is on the car and cant find anything on here about the flywheel other than removing it. here are the two starters i'm looking at:

Typically starters as well as most other parts from these stores are not 100% reliable or made to last anymore they are made in china, but if you do go that route get one with a lifetime warranty.

I dont know where Bosch starters are made anymore but maybe look into it.

On a 91 you should have the new style of flex plate, it really isn't called a flywheel on a auto.
The differences are that the older style is a solid piece, where the newer style has 3 spokes.

To remove and replace


To Remove the Starter

Disconnect the BATTERY Failure to do so will have SHOCKING RESULTS.

Jack the car and support it with jack stands or ramps.




Remove the 2 starter brackets Soak the nuts on the heat shield with PB-Blaster….
3 10mm nuts one 10mm bolt and a 13mm on the block. Two nuts on the starter, one on the upper
heat shield and one bolt to the left of the heat shield bottom





Remove the wires from the starter there is one 13 mm Nut and a spad connector, take them off before you remove the
Starter from the car.

To remove the starter it takes a 13mm . You will need a short 6pt socket
and a wobble extension to remove the middle starter bolt as it is holding
the heat shield…

You will need 2 or 3 6 inch extensions to remove the upper bolt…. The very top one is hidden…



Installations is the reverse of removal.... but catch the lower bolt then put the heat shield on and tighten that bolt.

Removing the passenger side tire and using about 3 feet of extensions help to get the top bolt.

Oh, I forgot, Hang the starter by the lower bolt.
Then place the back bracket on the block and the 2 nuts loosley on the starter that way you can use 2 hands at that point to finish getting the bolts in. Then remove the bracket and finish it......

When I replace the heat shield I usually get it in place, then for that and the "hidden" bolt I Tape those to the socket, and tape the socket to the extension...

Automatic, or manual? There is a difference, and Depending on which style all the bolts are on the left for a Automatic, and on the Right for a manual.

Manual
N 0447601
allen key head bolt M10X135

N 0447421 allen key head boltM10X150

Regular hex headed bolts can be substituted, be sure they are grade 8, or 10.

The Automatic uses 3 small 13mm headed bolts that are about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. I can't find the part number for you but they are a common bolt similar to the Starter rear lower y mount that bolts to the block. Same pitch that is.
