Sorry in advance if this doesn't make any sense.
Not new to VWs but I am a beginner when its comes to mk1 and mk2 and rebuilding. I was looking for the simplest model to start getting my hands dirty. I had been looking at the rabbit convertibles up to 84. Did these have ECU's back then? a friend of mine was claiming this so I wanted to check with your guys. The less electronic bs for me the better. Are there any suggestions you can offer. I checked out Cabby-info but did not get the exact answer I was looking for.
I was also pondering the idea of trying to swap in a diesel. Would I be looking at a complicated job?

Swapping a diesel in for a gas engine.
Difficult? no.
There is but a few wires on a diesel, and only a couple of relays.
Pulling out all the non-needed stuffs.
Removing the fuel system, save for the in-tank pump.
It depends on your skill level.

My skill level is not that high at all however I have a friend that is really good and does not mind helping me out.
From doing research I see that a swap from a mk3 TDI is the best idea. Avoid the Immobilizer and all. I guess swaping the matching tranny is all a good idea?
This may be a dumb question but is there any special wiring to be done to make the glow plugs operate properly?
