Speedometer howling at me

So, it's been cold in Seattle lately, and my speedometer apparently doesn't like it. When I start off in the morning, it squeaks until I get on the freeway. As soon as I hit 60 mph, it starts in with the most godawful howling you can imagine. (It sounds exactly like when the bearings went on the heater fan in my Volvo 240.) This persists until I slow below about 45 mph, then it stops for the rest of the trip.

Does this sound like the cable, or should I be looking for another speedometer head? I've seen cables break or strip before but this is a new one on me. This is an '89 if it makes any difference.

Either get a new cable, or take the cluster out to get to the cable and spray the inner thing with Tri=Flow.

But it is the cable, don't use graphite as that will make it squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel worse I know from experience.

Thanks, I'll do that. Fortunately it's supposed to warm up a bit next weekend, which increases the chances of getting the cluster out without breaking any more dash pieces. ;)
