brake lights stuck on?

Post by rb0095 »

So I've got a problem with the brake lights on my 1980 VW Rabbit convertible that does not make any sense to me and am hoping someone here may be able to help me out.

Here's the problem:

Most of the time the brake lights work just fine, but in the past few days they are doing something odd. At some point while I'm driving they get stuck on. So once I get to my destination I realize that they are on and try to get them to turn off. First I try pulling the pedal up to make sure it's not stuck...no fix. then I try pushing the brakes several times...no fix. Then the next thing I try is starting the car without holding the brake down, then I push the brake once...now the brake lights are finally off.

Out of the two times this has happened I did just that, and it fixed the problem both times.

Any ideas why the brake lights would do that?

Change the brake light switch.

They go bad and do what you are talking about.
Then fact that you have to move the pedal either way says it is bad.

I agree with Brian.

The switch is easy to change and I don't think they are too expensive.
