Nuts and bolts lost

Post by bbrown »

So I was going to change out my alternator belt with the nice new one that I picked up at NAPA when I came to the startling realization that I have lost BOTH of the bolts that hold the A/C compressor to the mounting bracket which is directly below the alternator allen head bolt that holds the base of the alternator to the same bracket that holds the compressor which is finally mounted to the head of the motor. So my predicament is that I thought that the bolts holding the compressor where 13mm heads, but they are not. I didn't have anything here at the house to test the fit of the nuts, but a 13mm head (8mm diameter thread) could simply push through the whole. I am thinking that the bolts must be either 14 or 15 mm heads (course thread) and nothing larger, but I could be wrong. If someone with A/C could go out and check their bolt head sizes it would be greatly appreciated. Here are a couple pics with the bolt hole in question circled:

Pepboys or Ace should have hte "Allen" that you need it has a 8mm Allen head and is about inch and a half long.

Just had them off my car a day ago to change the water pump.

My car was somehow missing them both, too. Made quite an interesting rattle. It had been that way long enough to wear little grooves in the engine block surface!

Since I didn't know the size I got them from the dealer. They were $2.13 each. Part number N-014-723-6.

I think it may be the water pump, but sadly I have not done any further diagnosis to prove whether it is or isn't (I know I know I am lazy/busy). I am also seriously contemplating removing the A/C altogether as well.

If that bolt is missing then the alignment of the a/c to the water pump is skewed, this off sided condition will cause undue strain on the belt ot run on the side of the pulleys and squeal and act the snot.

Didn't get your message till too late six, but I had to work all day anyways. My next free day is Monday providing I don't get called in. Maybe I can swing by after 12 or so Monday? If that works for you it works for me. Thanks.

It's 10:00 pm and just came in. After 12:00 on Monday should work. I'll be getting home around 3:00 or 4:00 am Monday morning and will get a couple hours sleep. Head into town and be back around noon or so. Gimme a call and make sure I'm coherent.

Well today Six took right care of me and my Cabby. I had the car over to his place and we looked over the A/C and his assortment of bolts and came up with the right bolts. Since my A/C system did not have a charge we started the procedure to remove the A/C system by removing the hoses and such. Next will be the compressor once I locate an alternator pulley with the proper extension so that I can run a non A/C belt for the alternator/water pump setup. ALSO, Six found my mysterious "squeak" and fixed it. The squeak was not the water pump as I had suspected, but actually a piece of tin shrouding that goes between the motor block and the pulley assembly. Needles to say I am very happy and extremely grateful. Thanks Six and your Diet Caffeine Free Coke is on its way.
