Mom always said it's what is on the inside that counts

Dash board vinyl

Post by Frogbutter »

The vinyl inside the defrosters has peeled up and is blocking air from blowing on my windshield. What is the recommendation for fixing it?
Think you can, or think you can't...Either way you will be right! :)

A new Dash.....

You could try using gorilla glue, but you would need to make a wedge to push in to the defroster hole to keep the material in contact with it. It would be best to remove the dash to make it easier to work with. You may get by by using rags as a wedge, but you would need to get them in real tight.

You would also need to clean the vinyl of the old crap.

Actually there is an update from VW. There are part #'s for little grilles that go in the holes and push the vinyl down to keep it there. If you have a local dealer near you and you trust them go there first. If you don't have any luck then I will use my contact up here to get the #'s. I had the same problem and it works great.

It's been my experience that Gorilla Glue can't glue two pieces of paper together let alone vinyl. For gluing vinyl, use a vinyl upholstery adhesive by 3M.

As for the plastic inserts, I didn't realize they made those! But, here are the part numbers for them:
171 857 461 B (need 4)
171 857 461 C (need 2)

I might just have to check into those myself... Might make the dash look a little more "finished". :D
