Cooling Fan Run on

Post by 12000rpm »

I have a 1987 Cabby with an auto trans, In the past few weeks the cooling fan is not shutting off. This is even after 10 minutes plus, My cabby does not have the optional run on fan system which can have the fan run on for up to 15 minutes, even after the key is removed. The only way I have found to stop the fan once it has started is to disconnect the battery, wait a minute and reconnect the cable. If I unplug the wires at the fan and reconnect, the fan will start again. Any suggestions???

You have either a thermo switch in the radiator that is wonky, or a bad fan relay. All Rabbits from 81 on had a fan run after power off.

Yes as matter of fact, I have the Luck o'the Irish...everything I touch turns to fertilizer of the bovine variety.

Thanks for the reply, I am surprised that there is a fan relay
I do not see it marked on the fuse panel or the shop manual, it does note that in 1990 models were fitted with a run after system
Can you explain where the fan relay is ???? Thanks

from the looks of it it is most likely to be your thermostat switch on the lower drivers side radiator.... Check the wires for nicks and cuts that could be shorting it to ground.

So as you have to drain the cooling system, just replace it, and flush the cooling system do a new thermostat and be done with it.

FWIW, the CIS Cabriolets do not have an after-run relay. If your '87 was in July of '87, it should have a relay in the engine bay for the two-stage cooling fan. If it was built before July, it does not have a relay for the cooling fan.
