Transmission Codes

Post by triplewhite »

My code is 9A31084. I assume that this '84 transmission is in my '87 car because it has been replaced before? What code should my '87 have in it? Or was this tranny used for its different ratios to compensate for the extra weight of the Cabriolet?? As I understand, the 9A was used in 1.6L cars around 1984.

I have a source for a FN. This will drop straight in right as the flanges and clutch are the same size?

Here is a page where you can see all the gear ratios for just about any 020 VW tranny. It should help give yu a better idea. Oh and you 9A is normal and a good tranny. FN & FF's were on Deisels if memory serves and unless you have a high power 8v, you won't like it much.

Here's the link,

yes, keep the 9A, you'll like it.
the FN and FF's were on a lot of older vws, it is a wide ratio trans, a good freeway cruiser and as i'm going to use it a nice top end trans.
isn't the 9A a 100MM flange trans?

Yea, it should be a 100mm flange. Doesn't really matter though. @ fairly strong people is all thats required to change out the flanges and thats just due to those damn springs.

We changed the flanges on the 4K thats in Kuklaki's cabby. Didn't even have to clearence anything, it fit, albeit just barely.

Though now I can't wait to get that 270 cam in the cabby this weekend. With that 4K, it should be wheel spin city :P

that 270 is a nice cam, i love mine! the only thing about it is it makes you want a bigger one :D
do you have an adjustable cam gear for it? it took me awhile to find the sweet spot with my cam gear for the 270, i can't remember where i set it right now..... it's been awhile since i had the hood open on the poor cab. :(

Ha ha, no problem...

The 9A I have is self-machining, so I do need to get something else... I've found a good FN for $150, but if it's dramatically different to what I have I'll keep looking.

Thanks all.

yeah, $150 is kinda high for an FN anyway.

The one's you really want to to look for are 9A, ACD, AUG and ACN. Those are the more generally common trannies.

Sadly enough, I have an AUG sitting in my garage, problem is, it has a trashed reverse gear.

If you're changing the tranny, this is a good time to replace the bushings in the shift linkage. You'll like the results.

You'll also have three of the four engine/trans mounts off, plan on at least the front and rear new. The driver's side will cost a little down time to either fabricate tooling or take the bracket and new mount to a shop with a press.
