I have an 87 cabby with a close ratio tranny, a 9A. Is it supposed to have a close ratio? The tranny is going to go soon, syncronizers are shot, big pices of metal were stuck to the drain plug when I drained it today and it grinds going into 3rd and 4th.
I'd like to replace it with a wider ratio, the close ratios are fun for drag racing, but too low geared for everyday driving imo, i like to be able to cruise through town in 3rd. I seem to remember the last cabby (1992) I drove 10 years ago was a wide ratio.
Did later cabbys come factory with close ratio?

Mine's an 87, and according to this site, it has the correct tranny.
