Hey William,

Welcome to the TDI world. I've had mine a year and a half now and I still love it. The torque is great.

If you aren't aware of the Hi Pressure Fuel Pumps (HPFP) in the common rail diesels have had issues in the US. Although all the causes have not been defined, it appears that fuel quality is the leading contender.

The folks over on the TDI Club forums recommend that you fuel at stations that move high volums of diesel (truck stops) and keep your fuel reciepts.

Other than that enjoy the ride. I found my TDI is probably the smoothest riding car I've ever owned.

Brian, I'll check and see if Wix makes a filter for the TDi, they haven't come up on any searches thus far, but Mann has and I've always liked their filters. Also the T-belt doesn't get changed till 120k, though I'll prollie change it closer to 100-110k just to be on the safe side.

Phil - I have read up on the fuel pump issues. I'm glad to see that VW has actually been taking care of them even out of Warranty, but there's no guarantee that they always will. As for fuel, there's a very busy truck stop an exit north of me and thats even where I filled the gas cars at for the most part since they are generally lower on their prices than everything in the area.

Planning on changing the oil and fuel filter in about 2 weeks as they are due anyway. DSG service is still 20k miles off but I'll prollie let the dealer do that the first time round as I need to get the special tool for filling that damn trans and the upgraded Vag-Com cable so I can monitor the fluid temp while doing the job.

I didn't want to scare you, but I did a little math using the numbers that were batted around on TDI Club and I determined that there is approx 1 falure per 1,000,000+ miles driven.

Actually it was less. but the point was the failure rate is only about 1%. I think some of the folks over at TDI Club are convinced that these will blow up.

But like any mechanical device, if you care for it properly, the chances of it failing are greatly reduced.

In the end, Enjoy the ride. I certainly enjoy mine.

Yea I didn't do the math but figured the failure rate was pretty low. I'm certainly enjoying the car. So far I've put a hair over 300 miles on it and on down to half a tank. I figure I'm averaging 41 mpg with 90% city driving. That will be changing in about 3 weeks though.

Next week will be oil and fuel filter change time. Still have another 20k before the DSG needs to be serviced.
