Re: 1984 Rebuild
We call it winter. It sucks. My cabbys are hibernating until Easter. So I can't work on them either. Well that's why there are those resorts in the Caribbean.

Re: 1984 Rebuild
Update on the Rabbit. I was able to work on it this past weekend, I got the tie rod, tie rod end, all boots, ball joints bushings back on and for the first time in 4 years the rabbit is not sitting on jack stands
I started it so I could move it from it's current spot to a different one and it would not budge. It is not currently running good enough to power itself anywhere. Time for new gas, vacuum lines and a few other little bits and pieces. It really runs rough right now.
But it does start and is off the jack stands. BIG Progress

Re: 1984 Rebuild
So after 12 years the Rabbit finally moved under its own power. Did not go far, did not go fast but it moved. I drove it to the end of our street and turned around, it does not run good at all over 1500 rpm and I will work on that next. And no brakes, but that is because there is no brake fluid in it
So the picture below, it isn't pretty yet but by golly it moves

What do you mean it isn't pretty? It's actually a thing of beauty!84Vert wrote:So after 12 years the Rabbit finally moved under its own power. Did not go far, did not go fast but it moved. The best part is it's only going to get better.
Congratulations.

Re: 1984 Rebuild
So yesterday I replaced the vacuum lines. Started the rabbit and it ran great! Best it has ran yet. So I thought lets drive it down the road. I get it to the end of the drive way and it starts spitting and sputtering! Great out of gas (the gas gauge does not work). So I put some gas in it and it does a little better. I take it down the road then go to put it up and it gets hung up in reverse
But I did get the front brake lines flushed.

One thing at a time. Rebuilding a older abused ride is a lesson in Love, Patience, Money, and Karma.

Re: 1984 Rebuild
Well as luck would have it I disconnected the linkage and no luck it is still stuck in reverse. Brian @ broke vw told me a couple of things to try so that is next on the to do list

Re: 1984 Rebuild
I need to get off my lazy butt and work on the Rabbit! Yesterday my neighbor did help me get the Rabbit back to it's parking spot. Since it is still stuck in reverse he held the clutch in and I pushed it with my 4 wheeler

Re: 1984 Rebuild
Ok, it is time for an update. I have not been able to work on the rabbit in a while for numerous reasons, family members health being one of them. Although I have started it a couple of times and let it run for a while. It is still stuck in reverse and I do not know when I will get a chance to work on it again. I am starting a new job on May 15th and that means we are moving 350 miles away. So the up coming weekends will be spent coming back to Crawfordville to get our house ready to sell. The Rabbit will be making the move on a tow dolly and will patiently wait till I can get back to work on it.

Ok, house is closing on 9/15, Rabbit has relocated to Sebring, but parked 11 miles from my house at my parents, looking forward to working on it again as soon as we get unpacked, not sure that will ever happen. My next move is to a nursing home!
