Worked on the VR, not the bunny

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Worked on the VR, not the bunny

Post by Calimus »

Welp, today had given me some interesting new issues with the Jetta. Changed the oil yesterday, went for a trip today. Went 50 miles, everything was great. Cruise control worked fine, nothing was out of the ordinary. Stayed at destination maybe an hour, then left. Once back on the highway, cruise control wouldn't work anymore and I had some funky issues with throttle responce (rpm's jumping up between gear shifts). So thinking that maybe she needed new plugs, I changed those, dumped some injector cleaner in the tank and topped off with premium gas (ouch).

BTW, if you haven't ever changed the plugs on a VR, it's not hard, just a PITA. No where near as bad as some minivans, but still, it's no A1. Pics of that can be located at the following link.

http://www.techography.net/gallery/vr6plugs

So, the plugs didn't solve the problem and now I'm thinking it's the damn throttle sensor or something in line with that since I get the rpm issue between gears. I'm not getting a check engine light either which makes figureing this out harder so I'm trying to see if anyone in my local area (via the Tex) has a Vag-Com system they can hook to the damn car.

Granted, the plugs needed to be changed, but I really didn't need this issue with the car right before the wife and I take some time off to relax. I was really counting on that cruise control for some trips.

Isn't the cruise control vaccume operated? by the Tach sensor.... so if you are having some issues with the electrical it could be the cause of all your ills. If you had an a1 I would say your xfer pumpen is nicht sehr gut.

LOL

Don't know a thing about the modern things.....
sounds kinda like a vaccume leak.

The cruise system on an MK4 needs not any vac, it's all electronic. Hell, there isn't even a speedo cable, it's all electronic.

There are vac lines though, 3 of them I think, but it looks to control much smaller things and those lines are in great shape.

It sucks, but if I can just find someone with a vag-com I know now (thanks to the tex) that there is a specific test to look at the pedal position sensor.

At least your MK IVs have cruise, for some stupid reason not many of them have it here.

I think on the MKIV's, it's an option on the GLI's (2.0 8v) and GLS's (1.8t). It's standard on the GLX (VR6).

Either way, it does me no good if it's not working. Thought maybe after a night of sitting somethign would magicly clear up, no such luck. :?

The option list is similar but not quite the same in Canada, a good example is that the Golf is not available in a 2 dr. unless it's a GTI.

As for your problem, Wouldn't it be neat if the car would fix it'self. But you ar right it'll never happen.

I bought a Golf this summer, The main reason, or so I was told, is that two door models other than the GTI wern't selling so well in Canada so the two doors were discontinued at the end of the 2003 MY (sucks).

I actually like the four door, but I am old school and would still prefer a two door.

I let VW know that too.

I thought cruise control was standard on all models (in the USofA). :?: My VR6 GLS has it, thank god! I was going to change my Jetta's oil myself the next go around, but now you've spooked me into maybe thinking twice about it! :?

I've got the Bentley for the Mk4s, so if you need me to look anything up, say the word (that is, if you don't already have a Mk4 Bentley).

Kamz, I have the MKIV bentley in PDF format. In some ways it's nice (search function nets some grand results quicker then thumbing through) however, sometimes I'd like to be able to just sit down with the damn book and read.

I'm thinking about borrowing my buddies pda and seeing about slapping it on there so I can sit and read with something that doesn't set my lap on fire and weighs 10lbs (read: my P4 laptop)

Oh and if for some odd reason, you want the pdf version, just let me know and I'll hook ya up. goes for the cabby/rabbit/scirocco bentley as well. :D

Figured you probably did  . I hardly ever open my Mk4 Bentley manual, so a PDF isn't necessary; thanks for the very generous offer though!

My Cab manual is literally falling apart; will be getting it spiral-bound pretty soon.
