go 1.8T
the weight difference is a lot
Here in Quebec, we have a few (well, about 10) A1 with 1.8T and they all decided to do it over the VR6.
Reason, weight and space.
A VR6 in an A1, the frame has a tentency to split ....
1.8T .... we got a local dynoing at 343whp

Maybe where you live. Here, the market is fucked up.
800$, you have a complete TDI engine without transmission.
200$ = 1.6TD engine
400$ = 1.9TD engine
(All canadian funds)
A VR6 engine runs in the 4000$ (quite rare here)
A G60 engine runs in the 800$ (we got Corrado G60 and Passat G60 here)
A 1.8T engine runs in the 3000$
A 2.0 16v runs in the 500$
a 1.8 8v ..... 100$
All Canadian funds.
Questions ?
2.0 16v Turbo = 250whp

Wow !!!
Probably cause you got a lot more VR6 on Calif than we got here.
For 3000$CDN, you get everything, ECU, tranny, etc
The best bang for the buck right now here are the diesel swaps (all 3 engines), 2.0 16v, G60 swap and ABA bottom/1.8 head and 1.8 bottom, 2.0 head and TD turbo. (similar to G60 turbo)
2.0 8v are also cheap as duck, available for around 300-400$CDN
But the cheapest engine here is the 1.8 8v mk3 (CL) engine. You can get some for 50$ since no one wants them (mono-monotonic)
Ok, we do have winters but here, parts are cheaply available. Volkswagen are easely available here since it's a big seller (TDI are about 50% of the market here, the mk3 1.9TD was about 30% and the A2 Diesel was about 30% of the market)
Diesel = big seller here.

here, 92 and under engines are easy to get. VW rust bad here if not taken care of. So seldom, you find a totally rusted and rooted body with a nice engine and transmission for cheap.
250$CDN Passat GL
Ok, that's a freaking deal but we see some randomly around 500$CDN
Buying a uber-nice Jetta A2, 1500$CDN
Dropping a 2L 16v, 10.1" brakes, etc, 500$
You're at 2000$CDN and you've got one nice car
