some sort of protective shield...

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

The shield on the Cat? My sources say it is a good thing, keeps it from getting punctured.

Cats are tough, if it rattles pull it off if it is annoying to you. I don't have the extra oneeither I removed it as it was rattleing.

It is really there to protect the ground from direct contact with the cat to prevent grass fires.

Rip em' off. Most aftermarket exhaust pieces don't have them. If you think about all the lawyers out there just waiting for a chance to sue and then balance that to the missing shields, how important could they be? The only shield I worry about is the one between the cat. and the floor because I have seen cats. get hot enough to ignite the carpeting inside the car.

I had a friend burn up a 76 transam...parked it over long grass. set 1/4 acre on fire too.

We were drinking some beers, it was funnier than hell...

Didn't exactly happen to me. I was working at a Subaru dealership and the lot boy went out to start all the cars on the front line to move/wash them. He started a mid 80's carburated Escort and left it on high idle with the windows all up. By the time he got back to it there were wisps of smoke coming from around the e-brake lever. He opened the door and fed the smoldering carpet oxygen. The world was one Ford fewer that afternoon. Made the papers and everything, I had a melted US quarter from under the rear seat glued to my toolbox for a long time.
