i manual shift my auto trans all the time.... but i'm trying to blow mine up.
one thing i plan to do to my auto trans is try to adjust the shift points so it'll hold a gear a little longer. i also need to mess with the kickdown, i almost have to shove the gas pedal through the floor for it to kickdown.

If you get the shift points adjusted let me know what you did, so maybe I can give it a shot. this car changes gear way too soon, and ya, I gotta put my foor through the floor as well to get it to go into passing.1lowcab wrote:i manual shift my auto trans all the time.... but i'm trying to blow mine up.![]()

i'll let ya know. i prolly won't get to mess with it this weekend, going to rain/snow all weekend.
on a side note, i did give the new cam a good test.
i was driving home after work last week and coming up on this long flat piece of road, no cars around so i nail it. it kicked down this time! from about 56mph it jumped to around 90mph and i held it down till 110mph and got scared that a state boy would come over the hill and let off. but at 110mph it was still pulling, HARD! that cam really opened up the top end.

For good info on the auto tranny use the 83 GTI Bentley. It has all the info you need to adjust/work on one. The Cabby manual simply says "You don't know enough to work on it so don't!"
BTW my auto finally decided to screw me this weekend. Will go in reverse but no forward motion. It could be a valve body clog but I'm betting it's something broken. Look like the great manual tranny swap will begin! I've been hoarding all the necessary pieces for months.

Well, I went ahead and swapped the auto out for a GTI manual 5 speed and it went reasonably well. The biggest hassle is making sure you have all the parts you need before hand cause there's a bunch!
For a write up on it see the Vortex post by me ,
