New guy with a 91

Post by bmwvwguy »

Hey guys and gals! My name is Mark and I've owned several cabs over the years. My last one was a black on black full clippered 81 on coils and bmw wheels. This one I got for $500 in early October and just started working on it Monday. I am not sure if it was a triple white or not as the top is black but I think it was replaced at some point. Interior though makes me think it was.

Other than the wheels (barf) and the radio, it seems to be all stock. It has been "tweekerfied" a bit but nothing I can't take care of. I do need to take and repair the seats but I am thinking about Recaros for the front and since I have to recover the rear seat back, I gotta do something cool with it. Thinking white leather with black piping. But I dont know. Also thinking about putting in ambient footwell lighting in a variable color setup like my kids 01 Cabrio.

If those seat bolsters aren't torn, then they do clean up rather well. Ne bolsters can be bought from VW heritage in the uk as well as mk1autohaus.com
Get to know www.cabby-info.com as that is a good place to start.

Oh trust me. I know Kammy's site very well.

The front seats are in good shape just dirty and rusty. Its the rears that are mismatched and trashed. But I will be doing suspension work on it so it will handle so I want something with nice bolsters to hold my fat self in place.

There are a lot of my how do I do that's for the 90ish Cabriolets here, they are also linked on the vortex as well as the rabbitowners club.

so what ever you have as a topic, I probably have fought that a time or 3.

I know. Ive been surfing your posts for a LONG time. Learned alot from them. Got more to learn on this one. Digi1 is not my favorite injection system but it works good so I'll keep it, for now. If it atarts failing though I have been thinking about a diesel swap. But then thats a whole new can of worms I dont k ow if I'm ready for.

Digi is pretty easy simpler than CIS, but it has it's quirks.
A good thread for timing is Ron's Static Timing using but a DVOM.
It doesn't require 2 men and a Monkey that the Bentley wants.

Shoot his side has some good diesel information as well. :)

A little Elbow Grease and a Brass Brush, your car can look like this, as yours is about what my 90 looked like when I got it.

Don't discount what LA's Totally Awesome cleaner spray will do, cheap @ 1.00/bottle at Dollar tree, or Family Dollar.

From the looks of the rear, your Cable tray is suspect, and if the rust is really bad under the top, and Cable, you may want to locate a Wrecker with a good cable tray and cut it out so you can have it welded in if you can't. Then have a respray of just that area.

sorry i didnt see this sooner. been a touch busy. i will be doing ALOT of work on this nugget. i did notice the rust in the rear and will be addressing that once i find the proper top for it. this one doesn't quite fit right and the frame is broken anyway. i will most likely yank the drive train out and reseal the motor while its out. paint the motor and clean EVERYTHING!!!!! just all takes time.
