1993 cabby won't start every now and then

Post by Jdog306 »

Hello, I'm new to the cabby world with that being said this cars driving me crazy. I bought the car for my wife and my son for when they are at the beach. I have done rutine mantience . Like plugs and wires, a newer top and suspension. Now to the issue it hasn't started on me 3 times since March . It seems to do it after the car has ran for under a hour. First time it happened it was off for about 15 minutes as me and my son ran into a store. Second time was while I was working on the belts . Third time was when my wife went to pick up my son . All 3 times it does the same thing it acts like the battery is dead with no clicking noice. I hear the fuel pump come on .I have power but the starter doesn't even try to come on .I hate electric problems. Any suggestions where to start. Ingition switch? Starter relay? Starter? It does or use to have a alarm init from previous owner. Any help would be welcome.

IS IT AN AUTOMATIC?

YES/NO

Yes install the heat soak relay. (www.cabby-info.com)

Here is another version with lots of pictures.
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.p ... lems/page2

see post 35 for how to test...

All else fails it is either the ignition switch or the starter interlock relay.
I have a how to by-pass the interlock
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1667http://www.top ... =27&t=1667

Be warned the car can be started in gear with the interlock fix.

If it is the ignition switch they are a PITA to change on a Airbaged car.
You have to remove the center console and lay it ont he passenger side.
You have to remove or Lower the kneebar.
2 t24 torx hold air bag on wheel
Mark the wheel to the center of the shaft.
Then there is the clock spring.
Getting it off isn't the issue replacing it it.
You turn the inner spring all the way clockwise to the stop.
Turn the clockspring CCW and count the turns.
Turn the clockspring 1/2 the amount of turns.
Return it.
After the clock spring is removed you can remove the 3 screws that hold the turns and light stalks (they can strip when going back if you over tighten them.
Remove the c-clip collar and spring remember the order.
After that you can remove the upper and lower covers.
There is a allen screw on the left side of the steering shaft that holds the upper bearing and switch/lock assembly. Remove it, then slightly bend it apart to remove.
Once apart your switch is held in by a itty-bitty phillips screw.

Going back locate the u-joint on the bottom floor board, use a straight slot, and a block of wood to apply up pressure on the shaft before you try to replace the spring and clip. Some times the inner shaft can collapse and you have to pull it out.

I think that is about all I know on a 90 intermittent no-start.....

Oh, and welcome to the forum, please post pictures, as we like to see your ride. You might want to register the car at the cabby-info.com registry.
