I don't know on the Mk III for sure, but if they do fit you will need a low profile tire for sure.

I tried a set of 17" on my '88 and sure enough they rub.

I took the liberty of moving your post here to the help section. I think you will get more responce here.

18s on a mkIII is pushing it. It can be done but you will prollie have to go with stretched tires. Width on the 18s is why you will need to go with stretched tires. As you lower the suspension the stretch will help keep the rubber inside the wheel well as much as possible. There are going to be several side effects of all of this such as poor tire wear due to negative camber as you lower. And that increases with larger wheels.

My advise would be to go no larger than 17s but at the end of the day, it's your car and only know how you want it.

First JUST SAY NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Friends don't let Friends do 18's.....
MK1 frame is the 1977-1993 Rabbit, Rabbit convertible, and the Cabriolet.

MK3 or A3 frame is the 1995-2004 CABRIO. In actuality the Cabrio is really closer to a MK3.5...Although there is no mk3.5

Here is a thread with 17" on a Cabrio

Hey now, 18's look great on the right car. A MKIII Cabby however can't pull it off without pulling the fenders and a lot of other mods. In the end, it can look good, but will seriously reduce drive-ability. It's one of those areas where you have to decide what you want. Something that looks bad ass going really slow or something that looks great but you can take it almost anywhere in comfort.

And just to rub it in Brian, I had 19's on the A6. Looked awesome, but damn those were some expensive tires.
