Re: The past week in Car repiar
Damn near finished with the new top... Maybe tomorrow I can get the rear window installed.... Otherwise it is all that is left besides cleaning up my mess.
oh, and re-installing the interior.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Finished the top and pad last week, This week I hung a new catalytic pervertor on the car, and it still wouldn't pass emissions.......
So the new ngk's and filters and oil said eff you....
I put some high test in it, some garruteed to pass, and drove it to Gainsville, topless on Wed, and with out a hat, I burned my head to the scalp.....
Still wouldn't pass, so I decided to sea foam it.
Car half out the garage, and the reason for the hi-nox became clear... The Neighbor was going to call the fire dept because of all the smoke in the garage,,, and my car was half out the garage.
Take off all the crap to put the header on, and decided that I would run with the 4-2 g60 manifold, and have my muffler guy do a down pipe.
The nice thing is, that I replaced the timing belt.... it was noisy. Then I got to use my new impact gun, and it took the exhaust studs or nuts off the car beautifully and nothing broke.
I did find some stainless studs 8X1.25 with the hex bolt top to drive them in.
Hopefully I will get it back together tomorrow.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
After having to remove more than I wanted, I got the g60 manifold on, and the dual down on, it is in 2 pieces and I can't get it hung till Monday.
Found the venturi for the auto was leaking, 3/4 of the plumbing hoses were loose and Leaking the little green cap that is on the Brake Plastic vacuum hose was split and leaking. Then the hose for the Fuel pressure Regulator was leaking... Got all that fixed, Got my injectors cleaned and remounted, and the crud scraped off my Throttle body as well as all the other connectors and ISV were cleaned internally as well as externally.
Got in the car, No rear muffler connection to the car, and turned the key on, waited for the fuel pump to prime... And if fired right up..Loud, gassy.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Damn Brian, been going non stop haven't you? I haven't done anything car related in who knows how long. I've been rather absent as of late but that's been due to some projects at work and one of my best friends passed on the 10th. So I've been rather per-occupied for the last few weeks. Hoping tomorrow to replace the rear brakes on the Beetle and then tear into the right front of the A6 and see what damage I did by hitting a pot-hole on Monday while down on WindyHill. I think the tire and wheel are fine, I'm rather concerned that I screw up one of the new control arms I just installed last November.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Got the manifold on, and the muffler shop dual down pipe in, and all welded up. Fixed about 15 little vacuum leaks, and then when we were replacing the strut bar, one of the mount bolts spun in the mount. After a few minutes swearing.... DINGGGGGGGG... got out the wire welder, removed the tire and welded the bolt in place...
Started the car, and drove it... and it scoootsssssss, it's an auto?... Stomped on it on PIB (Peachtree Industrial Blvd) and at 60 it down shifted to 2nd, and started to go ,,,,, I got about 47 smiles per gallon at that point..... So I hope it will pass emissions now.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Brian if your car still fails for nox you may need an o2 sensor. I did a lot to my 93 to try to pass but it was running stupid lean causing high nox. One trick to make it pass is to set ignition timing a few degrees after tdc. I wouldn't run it long that way but it will get you to pass smog.

I have bought a new o2, but it passed with flying colors, all the little vacuum leaks and really really cracked manifold was the issue.eric4321 wrote:Brian if your car still fails for nox you may need an o2 sensor. Re: The past week in Car repiar
Knew it was too good to be true, the Green one had to be towed to my house. @ 2:00am downtown, I ain't gonna get it going.
So far, what I know is that the CTS sensor is ca-ca, the Fuel pump relay is going out after 20 minutes, and she lost the Driver side, front, and passenger side mount all died.....
Pretty Sure the CTS and the Fuel Pump relay will resolve the dieing after 20 minutes on the Road issue.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Drivers side tranny mount, Passenger side Tranny mount, front and rear Tranny mounts, then found that the t-stat cover wasn't cracked it was warped out the ass, and the new o-ring that came with it was wrong, thankfully I had a spare. Then the Water outlet flange was weeping so I am thinking that the bad mounts vibrated the hell out of them. New CTS sensor installed, all that is left is the Filling of the radiator, hanging the p/s pump and replacing the pulleys and belts.... So it has been a productive day....

Re: The past week in Car repiar
For those that are considering installing a "Cold Air Intake" by using a Cone Filter instead of the Air box (Which isn't a cold air intake really.).
I have mentioned before that there is out gassing from the Battery that can lead to internal corrosion. Well here is 1.5 years after installing a new Bosch battery. It has the little vents on either side of the cover.

The issue is that over run from a over charged battery, and or out gassing did this.
Corrosion on the Case of the Transmission:

Corrosion on the shifter and accelerator cables and bracket yes I have an Auto and NO I AIN"T GONNA CHANGE IT!:

It corroded and ruined the transmission mount, as it deteriorated the rubber to metal bond.
But it also attacked the Mounting Bolt:

So all being said, Cone Filter Bad Idea, these are just exteriors that I can stop.... Gee I wonder what that would of done to the Internals?

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Bad wheel bearing being replaced today.....little more than a year old, so I suspect that it was improperly installed as in no pre-load.
Thankfully I have all the tools I need to git-r-done.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
On the green car it had a bad noise on the front end.... found the issue to be, the inner fender "popping" on the outer fender, then I had to tighten the
Strut Collars about 1 complete turn, to totally eliminate all the rattles... Did it on the car, so when replacing your struts I would suggest that after you get them installed, then you smack the collars home as it can't move.
To top it off as Terri and I were driving the green car to get a Pork Butt, we turned the corner and the fuel pump decided to go out....we had to call the son to "tow" it home. If I survive the DRAMA of the wedding from hades today...I might get to fixing it later on this week.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Green car being the ass. It will Idle, but under load spits sputters, and dies. Then it won't idle and dies.
Not the fuel, checked the pressure and the quantity and that passes.
Not the exhaust system disconnected it after the cat.
Not the CTS sensor, replaced.
Found the issue as the ECU (Digifant).
Changed it out with a spare, and the car runs and don't bogs down, but idles at 800. I think it is because it is pre-92....
Tried to adjust the idle to no avail.
But did find a bad vacuum hose.
Will run to the "Yard" tomorrow to see if I can find a suitable ECU.
