Pictures still forthcoming. Good news and bad news. Good news, motor turned over yesterday, nothing is stuck! Bad news, gas tank is full of 7 year old gas, and tunning my finger around the top of it inside, it is full of rust also, time for a new tank. Pretty sure the fuel pumps will not be any good either

Tell the truth please. Somebody planted a cabby seed and it grew there right???
Is anybody else besides me amazed how the metal is holding up on these cars? Yes I've seen some with rust, but besides the windshield area, have seen many more that have no rust.
Is the wolfsburg edition sticker on the front fender?

That is because it is against the law in Germany to drive a car on the road that has rust.CajunSpike wrote:Tell the truth please. Somebody planted a cabby seed and it grew there right???

All the car manufacturers in Germany have great corrosion prevention from the start.
The Cabriolet being made in Germany has to be made to German standards.
I mean if you look at the under side it is coated in Body Shootz, that rubberized coating, and under the hood and where water can collect on seams Cosmoline was used.
The big problem is that after market or non-oem panels don't have the same anti-rust coatings on them.
My 81 Diesel didn't have a lick of rust on it after 4 years driving in Illinois winters, and 16 in the south. But I did the Crude under coat.
I drove over a freshly oiled road at 50 mph about 5 months after I got it, so there was road oil slung where ever the water would normally spray.
Took me 3 weeks to clean it off the doors and such.

I can attest to the 'after market part' thing.
I got rear ended in my 73 super beetle. had to replace the original german rear apron...ended up with one from brazil. By the time i decided to sell that car, the apron wasn't looking too healthy. Even though the german one was badly damaged, it showed no rust at all.
The later beetles did seem to have a bad rust problem right around the rear window air vent area, but it was from the inside to outside. I suspect there was some foam insulation in there that held onto moisture, eventually leading to the rust forming.
Hey Mr B...I do enjoy yakking with you...thanks. Always feel like I go away smarter than I was before we talked.

Yes, it has the wolfsburg sticker. Seat frames are pretty much shot except the rear which will just need recovering, fronts will need to be replaced.
I agree about the rust, I was expecting it to be full of it. When we picked it up it had about 2 inches of water in the floor boards.

Post a pic of the interior when you get a chance. I have some seat frames that might be useful.

Hi and welcome to TRF.
I am just finishing up an '88 Cabby project and I agree with the comments on rust. The only bad areas were the front fenders, which have both been replaced.

Re: Another new member
Been a while since I have posted. Here is an update. I took off Wednesday and got the new gas tank and fuel pump installed. Side note, it took me 30 minutes to find the switch that my father in law put in to bypass the fuel pump relay! Finally around 5pm it started and ran! First time in 9 years! Now on to the other items it needs to get it road worthy.
