Re: The past week in Car repiar
Well I spent a bunch of hours detailing Topless Bunny for World of Wheels.
Then on Thursday night I had to drive the car to the show.
Then more detailing.
Finally the show started Friday afternoon and on 'till Sunday.
In the meantime my new top for the project car came in (I know what I'm doing Easter week end).
A friend of mine is having problems with her GTI, and I am going to have to scan it for her (she knows I have a VAG Com). Other than that, its been quiet here latley.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Yesterday I noticed that my Jetta is pouring oil onto the ground. there was quite a big spot on the driveway where it was parked.
So today I climbed under it and noticed a lot of oil splash around the oil filter, not to mention the tell tale drip down the side of the filter.
I have tightened up the filter, and cleaned the area, but it still seems to be dripping.
Since we have had a lot of cold weather lately, I'm wondering if the seal in the oil filter has gone bad and is leaking. Is that possable?
I'm due to do an oil change in about 800 km (500 Mi) So I wonder if I just do an oil change will cure the problem?

If you have the oil cooler on it then it is probably that o-ring that is leaking.
I have seen sensors on my old Diesel shoot oil out the back of them too.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Yup. I would bet dollars to donuts it's the oil cooler O-ring. I had one go on my '89 and I got about a mile before I ran out of oil. They like to let go in cold weather. I'm planning to change the one on the '88 preventatively.
I've had the pressure sensor go bad there, too. Leaked about three quarts in 30 miles(!)
Any leak there winds up huge because the oil's under pressure.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
The oil all appears to come from the filter. Only the bottom of the oil cooler is "wet". So my guess is the seal on the oil filter. But for the extra time and effort to replace the oil cooler "O" ring, makes it worth my time to do as well.

ITS ALIVE!!!!
for the first time in 3 years or so, I've heard the Cabby rumble! Rebuilt the VWMS fuel distributor this morning, got a good spray pattern on the injectors, and she fired up in about 3 cranks. I still need to set the time, and I found a bit of a coolant leak. The old school Rabbit Hutch front sway still needs to be reinstalled, as well as pouring some gear oil into the tranny that's been sitting around for, um, 6 or 7 years.
In related news, I completely forgot what the micro-switch in the vacuum lines by the dizzy is for......

Re: The past week in Car repiar
90% up and running! Fully drivable, and got to take her out for a spin this afternoon. I stripped the speedo gear within the first two blocks on the road. Oh well, saw that coming. I can't find 5th, so i need to do a slight shift linkage adjustment. otherwise, everything is a go!

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Well now that I got the oil leak solved on the Jetta (It was the oil cooler seal by the way), I am getting ready to bring the project car home., I've already bought the new top and a few other small parts that I will need to fix. Now it the spring weather we have will just stay.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
ssssooooo nice to have been driving the cabby for a few days - even if it has been pissing down rain. replaced speedo cable today, and now i've got a speedometer again! The iPhone did ok for a few days, but wasn't always reliable. Wiper blades replaced and I can see.
Alignment tomorrow, and hopefully i'll pass an emissions test afterward...

Re: The past week in Car repiar
Nice to see some folks getting their wrench on. I'm a bit sidelined. I wrenched by back Friday and haven't been worth a damn since. Was able to go to work today though so I'm getting better. Sore as hell though.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
I just bought an old Mercedes 300TD, so I'll be doing some wrenching on that this weekend. Needs new fuel lines, as it's weeping diesel everywhere. Also needs the ALDA line cleaned out and the fueling turned up. That should wake it up a bit; at the moment it's more sluggish than it should be.
