Well lets say that the directional tires have a arrow pointing to the forward direction of rotation.
If you have the tire on wrong here are the indications.
Rear, when slowing down, the wheel will bounce and feel like a bubble is in the tread.
Front, the wheel will bobble, and vibrate the hell out of the wheel.
Now ya know. (probably the last set of Directional Biased ones I ever buy.) Oh and when you have them replacing one because of a road hazard, be SURE to check the direction of rotation to the side of he car it is going back on.

Hate to admit I'm a big fan of directional tires. Reason being is that I don't expect some of those folks in tire shops to be the sharpest tool in the shed and the fact the directional arrow is there is a little added help. However, as you pointed out, some don't even bother to look.
