So you won't laugh at my misfortune even though I invite it, but would rather see me come to physical harm. You are a twisted one sir. Must by why we get along so well

Brian, you would have had a real hoot when I was removing a motor from
a semi-auto Beetle and the kid that I was training at the time asked me
if it was OK to remove the last bolt. He was worried that the motor would
fall out. I laughed and said that it would take quite a bit of wiggling to get
the motor free of the transmission studs. Then he took the last bolt out and
dropped the motor on my face. Yeah, I know. Explains a lot doesn't it.

A friend of mine aske dme if I could change the alternator on his 78 Superbeetle vert. I said sure....
This is before I found out that I had to drop the engine. No biggie.... Right...
Getting it down wasn't the issue. When my son and I was jacking it back into place the vert slipped off the jack stands and my son caught it
in time to prevent the engine from being crushed.... Nice to have a large son.....

But oh the stories I can tell of getting hair caught in a fan belt.
Or the time I was working on my Diesel and I had the engine running and was under the hood.
My number 2 daughter snuck out to the garage and rode her trike over bubble wrap.....
Scared the bejeezers outta me and I whipped up and hit my head on the hood, then the hood left the
prop rod and the safty catch caught me in the back of the neck...

This is really gonna get you then.

You don't have to drop the motor to get the alternator
out of a Beetle ragtop.

Sorry....

You don't take the fan off with the alternator. There is
enough room to get a ratchet and socket on the back side
of the fan to take the nut off. Then you remove the strap
and slide the alternator out of the bracket. I have had the
nuts get a little stubborn and have had to unbolt the manifold
and throttle body so that I could get the alternator out with
the fan attached. Still easier than dropping the motor. I
have seen many people do just what you did though.

That was short lived.

Are you going to finish the Jetta or not?
